Job Summary

AECOM is recruiting for a highly experienced Rock Engineer to work on a range of rock engineering projects in UK&I and the wider EMIA Region, including tunnels and underground openings, deep excavations and slopes. Our projects are in many sectors including transportation, power, water and mining.

The success applicant will have extensive experience in rock engineering design and analytical techniques, gained largely in a consultancy environment, and also ideally substantial hands-on construction experience.

The role will involve close technical management of all project phases from studies through to implementation of rock engineering works. You will have extensive experience in a similar consultancy role, with strong skills in rock mass characterization and modelling, and in the design and implementation of underground and slope excavations and support systems and monitoring regimes.

Nationally our Ground Engineering team comprises some 190 staff and provides one-stop access to services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for geotechnical works. We work for leading UK and overseas clients and have an impressive portfolio of major infrastructure projects including Crossrail, Thames Tideway, HS2, and major rock engineering commissions such as the Hinkley C nuclear power station deep temporary excavations and onshore tunnels, and the Stockholm Bypass and A303 Stonehenge tunnelling.

Job Duties:

The appointed individual will play a key supporting role to our Head of Rock Engineering, managing and directing the delivery of rock engineering services, working closely with colleagues in our Ground Engineering and Tunnelling groups and a key technical and project delivery interface with our clients. The individual will serve both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget, and must have strong behavioural competencies with respect to client care, collaborative working, responsibility, H&S management, accuracy and quality of work and independent decision making.

Minimum Requirements

Specific Skills Required:

  • A strong track record in technical leadership and delivery of complex underground rock engineering projects.

  • Extensive experience in rock data acquisition and interpretation, development of ground models and design parameters.

  • Highly numerate with extensive hands-on experience in numerical modelling techniques using commercial software, preferably including UDEC and 3DEC.

  • Good working knowledge of design to EC7 codes.

  • Highly experienced in the preparation of baseline reports, construction drawings, specifications and monitoring requirements.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to write concise well-structured technical reports and specifications etc. is essential.

  • Strong problem solving and inter-personal skills. Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients.

  • Knowledge of commonly used forms of contract (notably NEC) with experience of implementing and administering project change procedures would be advantageous.

  • Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK and occasionally overseas.

  • Preferably holds Chartered status with a relevant institution.

Preferred Qualifications

A good first degree in Geology or Mining Engineering and a relevant post-graduate qualification, ideally a PhD in rock mechanics, is preferred.
