AECOM Water/Wastewater Conveyance Project Engineer in Charlotte, North Carolina

Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Water/Wastewater Project Engineer for immediate employment in the Charlotte, NC office to support various projects for municipal, State, Federal and private clients – with an emphasis on conveyance and pumping systems.

Candidate will perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to, site investigations, field measurements, existing utility investigations, conveyance design, hydraulic modeling, capacity studies, condition assessments, environmental permitting, lift station evaluation/design, construction administration and observation. The candidate will provide engineering design and construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D. Additional responsibilities include utilization of GIS software tools to manage and analyze data and report preparation. The candidate will work on projects from the planning and detailed design phase and through permitting and construction phase. The successful candidate will have ample opportunities to develop professionally through frequent collaboration with senior engineers, project manager’s, clients, regulatory agencies, and industry-leading senior team members.


  • Utilizes basic engineering principles, judgement, theories, practices, and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope

  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures and practices

  • Works on routine or detailed engineering assignments involving calculations and engineering analysis

  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision

  • Proposes approaches to solve new problems

  • Identifies discrepancies in outcomes, results, and analysis of engineering tasks

  • Provides guidance to entry-level engineers

  • Software use includes, but is not limited to: AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, etc

  • Record and interpret data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance

  • Perform site visits and field observations during construction

  • Determines permitting requirements and prepares submittal packages to governing agencies

  • Work under supervision of a senior project manager in the water/wastewater practice or senior level team members

  • Able to conduct occasional field work, tolerate variable environmental conditions, walk on uneven surfaces, and lift and carry at least 50 pounds, when needed

  • Occasional business travel may be required

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification

  • 2+ years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • U.S. Citizenship is required (due to the nature of the projects)

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the planning, permitting, and design of water and wastewater conveyance projects

  • Experience in task management or project management

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in generating pipeline construction drawings and plans in AutoCAD Civil3D

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer License in North Carolina or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.

  • Master’s Degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering a plus

  • Five (5) years of progressive experience with municipal water/wastewater conveyance and pumping engineering, design and permitting

  • Must have demonstrated time management skills, work ethic and attention to detail

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Must have the ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with technicians, designers, engineers, and other project managers for the preparation of high-quality work products

  • Works collaboratively in teams and independently when necessary

  • Must have the ability to communicate and coordinate with clients, subconsultants, regulatory agencies, and members of the public as may be necessary to accomplish assigned objectives

  • Experience designing large diameter pipeline projects
