Entry/developmental-level truck drivers are responsible for loading, driving, and unloading trucks within the metro Washington, D.C. area. They must hold as a minimum a Class B driver's license and be capable of operating a range of vehicles to include box trucks, forklifts, and other material handling equipment. Drivers will handle a more limited range of cargo than that of a full-performance truck driver. Work consists of driving trucks and other vehicles to established safety standards; loading/unloading cargo (much of which is nonstandard and may include hazardous materials); and making personal deliveries to customers in office settings. Truck drivers work independently, under general supervision of a first-line contractor supervisor; they may work in tandem with a more senior truck driver when making deliveries in the local WDC area..
Prepares for trip:
Receives trip assignment and manifest from section chief.
Performs safety inspection of vehicle and note any needed repairs on Vehicle Condition Report.
Performs routine vehicle checks and tops off oil, antifreeze, and windshield fluids as required, as well as adjusting tire pressure.
Assists with truck loading as necessary, ensuring that material is loaded in accordance with weight distribution guidelines and limitations.
Records travel data in driver's log.
Drives truck to designated local delivery point(s); may be accompanied by a more senior truck driver.
While driving, employs surveillance detection techniques to include using alternate, circuitous routes.
Assists in identifying items requiring special handling at delivery point.
As necessary, unloads truck and delivers material to specific customers in office settings using a variety of material handling equipment; professionally represents Logistics by providing solid customer service.
Picks up material for return delivery to the warehouse facility
Reloads truck and returns to designated location.
Assists crew, as necessary, with loading backhaul cargo, ensuring that material is loaded in accordance with weight distribution guidelines and limitations.
Confirms that material loaded onto truck corresponds with return trip manifest.
Records travel data in driver's log.
Perform ad hoc warehouseman duties such as loading/unloading trucks and moving materials between designated staging locations.
Ability to obtain a basic knowledge of Agency unique policies and regulations that pertain to the secure transportation of materials.
Basic knowledge of DOT regulations on transportation of hazardous materials.
Basic knowledge of loading dock safety procedures and requirements.
Basic knowledge of Windows-based computer applications.
Ability to obtain a basic knowledge of the Working Capital Fund business operating structure.
Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
Ability to pay attention to detail to ensure that the material delivered and/or picked up matches with what is documented on the cargo manifest.
Ability to safely operate a range of vehicles (within the scope of the commercial Class B driver's license) and material handling equipment.
Ability to operate a range of vehicles, including box trucks, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment.
Ability to load cargo in accordance with weight distribution guidelines and limitations.
Ability to read maps and follow directions to locate proper delivery destinations.
Ability to lift up to 70 lbs.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance in accordance with Agency regulations.
Class B driver’s license.
Pass DOT medical physical for operating trucks.
Six months’ general work experience.
