We are currently recruiting for a Principal Bridge Engineer to join our busy and expanding Bridges team in our centrally located Cardiff office. Our Cardiff bridges office forms part of a West & Wales region with other offices in Bristol and Swindon. Combined with our neighbouring Central region, consisting of offices in Birmingham, Chesterfield and Bedford, the two regions comprise of 130 bridge engineers and technicians working seamlessly to deliver a wide range of challenging projects.
This office is a large multidisciplinary office set at the heart of the city centre within a 5-minute walk of both the train station and shopping centre. Our modern office comprises a vibrant mix of disciplines including buildings & places (structures & M&E), Transportation (Highways & Transport planning), Environment (Ecology, GDS, Archaeology) and Water Ports & Power. The bridges team provides design, assessment, inspection, repair/remediation, construction support and management services on a wide range of transport infrastructure projects.
Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international bridges and structures projects in both rail and road including numerous long-term frameworks.
A selection of our current and recent projects includes
Network Rail Wales & West CP6 IP – AECOM support Principal Contractors Morgan Sindall and AMCO-Giffen for ‘Design & Build’ contracts in both the Western and Wales routes undertaking new-build detailed design and bridge refurbishment schemes through F001 to F003 delivery.
Civils Assessment Framework Agreement (CAFA) – AECOM is appointed across nine rail routes for the framework contract. Our Bristol team supports Wales and Western routes in undertaking Level 1 & Level 2 assessments of overbridges, footbridges and underbridges to a multitude of structural materials including steel, wrought-iron, cast-iron, pre-stressed concrete, masonry arches with structures aging from 200 years old to modern construction forms. Our works involve: undertaking Inspection for Assessment to determine condition, loading and obtain dimensionality of structures; structural analysis including grillages (Level 1) and Finite Element Analysis (Level 2) and reporting including sensitivity analysis and recommendations for further works.
WECA – AECOM provides TAA support, design and asset management services to the four local authorities that make up WECA (West of England Combined Authority) including Bristol CC, South Gloucestershire CC, Bath & North-East Somerset CC and North Somerset CC. We help support the local authorities through technical advice including departures from standard and AiP approvals, and providing consulting services including assessments, remediation, strengthening and detailed design of new structures in accordance with DMRB and Eurocode standards.
SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agent) – AECOM are engaged to provide engineering support services within the ‘Central’ section. Recent schemes have included reinforced concrete repairs including cathodic protection, PTSI examination, pier impact assessment to IAN91, rehabilitation of half-joints, replacement of expansion joints and bearings and improved vehicular containment to bridges.
CORMAC – AECOM is appointed as ‘strategic delivery partner’ and responsible for providing numerous transportation services including bridges to Cornwall County Council on behalf of CORMAC; schemes include bridge replacement, bridge refurbishments and structures remediation.

Act as Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE) to trainees working towards Chartership
Secure and deliver works to new and existing clients
Project management of schemes including client reporting, programming, resource planning and commercial management
Extensive experience with bridge inspection, assessment and design schemes.
Proven project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.
Extensive experience in road and/or rail projects in the UK.
Previous exposure with clients including: national and local authorities and/or Network Rail and ideally Principal Contractors.
Proven ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.
You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites.
Strong ability in various software packages ideally including LUSAS and MIDAS, with strong experience in Finite Element Analysis preferred.
Strong knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards.
Strong experience in delivering bridge design through Highways England and Network Rail standards
Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering
Ideally educated to MSc / MEng level or equivalent
Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE
