Job Summary
AECOM is actively seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with experience and focus on the design, safety assessments and construction of High to Extreme Consequence of Failure embankment and tailings dams in Western Canada as well as other regions of North America. The position for employment can be based out of any of its Western Canada offices (for example Burnaby, Kelowna or Victoria BC, Calgary or Edmonton AB, Saskatoon SK or Winnipeg MB). The successful candidate will have a key role in development and growth of our embankment and tailings dam practice in Canada and will include opportunities to work with our dam teams internationally. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Plans, directs, and supervises all operations included in large, high complexity embankment and tailings dam projects or several moderately sized projects with greater risk and complexity, and significant financial, environmental and human impact.
Resolves complex issues
Provides direction and mentoring to intermediate and junior technical staff in completing project tasks and collaborates with senior staff to develop innovative ways to win opportunities in the dam sector.
Performs independent technical reviews of engineering reports and designs
Works with clients to provide long term sustainable solutions.
Competent to serve as Engineer-of-Record
May be responsible for project teams that include 10 or more members often representing multiple business lines or subcontractor(s), working in remote locations
Regularly develops and evaluates project plans

BSc. + 10 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and or education.
Professional Engineering License required
Must possess a valid driver’s certificate

Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering from CEAB-accredited institution +15 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
Strong technical progression within geotechnical engineering as it relates to dams
Excellent verbal, written communication skills
Demonstrate proactive problem solving skills
Ability to maintain organization in a changing environment
Exhibits initiative, responsibility and flexibility
Experience with and ability to make informed decisions regarding intrusive and non-intrusive field investigations, basic and advanced laboratory testing and material characterization
Experience with coupled and uncoupled seepage analysis, slope stability analysis and deformation analysis
Experience with conceptual and feasibility level design, preliminary design, detailed design, construction and site closure.
Experience managing and working with a multi-disciplinary team
Ability to work in a fast paced environment and meet deadlines
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Appropriately experienced candidates will have acted as a geotechnical leader for embankment and tailings projects including the full life cycle of tailings management and dam design
Experience in client service and business development strong asset
Strong understanding of finite element theory for soil and rock including knowledge of advanced geotechnics as it relates to real soil behavior
Knowledge of elastic, elastoplastic and advanced constitutive models for linear and nonlinear materials.
Advanced knowledge of models associated with seepage and consolidation
