Job Summary

The Transportation division of AECOM has an exciting opportunity for a creative, highly talented MoTI Highway Manager to join our Transportation team in Burnaby, British Columbia. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in BC highway engineering. The candidate will focus on MoTI projects, but will also be responsible for delivery of a range of projects for both private and public sector clients. AECOM’s transportation business in Vancouver is made up of professional and technical experts in the roads, planning, airports, bridges and rail disciplines.

As a Team Leader your responsibilities will include coaching, mentoring, forecasting workload, planning workflow and driving team performance. Ultimately you will be responsible for the collaboration and successful delivery of a range of projects for both private and public sector clients. You will also be expected to be the bid manager and lead on preparing technical proposals for local and potentially large complex projects. Business development will also be an integral part of your role as a team leader.

As a senior highway engineer your knowledge and understanding of delivery expectations must be understood to effectively lead as projects are executed under conventional or alternative delivery models. Moreover, less experienced staff will seek guidance and direction making a strong understanding of highway design codes is critical. Implied is an ability to complete a highway design from planning through to detailed design stages. Enjoyment of deriving technical solutions from a pragmatic understanding of empirical theories is an attribute.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of staff including development, mentorship, and recruitment of your direct reports

  • Support client relationships by performance, service and effective communication

  • Project management responsibilities including financial, quality and schedule management of projects

  • Preparation of reports, proposals, and other documentation for clients, review agencies, and the public

  • Coordination of highway design activities for AECOM’s Burnaby office in concert with other offices across Canada

  • Effectively communicate workload requirements to senior manager and manage resources on projects

  • Taking a lead technical design role and ensure compliance with current design standards

  • Undertake technical analysis, including developing new methods and techniques, to complete complex or unique studies

  • Direct and assist technical staff with design and review work undertaken by them to ensure that all deliverables are completed to a high degree of accuracy and to AECOM’s Quality Standards

  • Promote and maintain a safety culture that keeps staff healthy and safe and protects the company’s assets

  • Assist with staff development, and provide input and recommendations relative to staff needs, performance, and remuneration

  • Works independently with general guidance

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution

  • 10+ years in highway engineering with significant recent MoTI design experience

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in British Columbia (or eligible for registration)

  • Experience in successfully managing highway projects

  • Experience in consultancy, both the business and contracts

  • Ability to market AECOM and services directly to potential clients

  • Experience with business and contractual agreements

  • Strong financial acumen

  • Experience in directing teams of engineers and technicians

  • Familiarity with highway design codes and design guidelines, specifications and technical standards

  • Experience participating in multi-disciplinary engineering projects, with ability to manage and coordinate supporting design inputs- drainage, structures, lighting, aesthetics, etc.

  • Ability to work independently

  • Strong interpersonal, negotiating, problem-solving and analytical skills are a must

  • Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems, and completes the task with minimal supervision

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate engineering discipline is preferred

  • Professional Project Manager (PMP) certification or equivalent is preferred

  • Ideal candidates will have>10 years BC MoTI project experience

  • A trusted relationship with the BC MOTI staff, and intimate knowledge of thier policies and procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to grow a team

  • Demonstrated track record of delivering a range of technical projects from new build to rehabilitation

  • Candidates that are active in the local British Columbia community and are involved with professional affiliates such as CEA, APEG BC and PMI-Canada British Columbia Chapter​
