Job Summary

The AECOM UK&I Ground Engineering Practice is expanding due to increasing project wins and a diverse workload and has a vacancy for an early career level Engineering Geologist in Basingstoke. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate already filling this role elsewhere, or a good graduate with some experience looking to make the next move in their career.

Our Ground Engineering Practice covers all elements of Ground Engineering with a wide range of end markets including highways, rail, water and nuclear sectors.

AECOM’s Ground Engineering specialists provide one-stop access to services in feasibility studies, site investigation, interpretation, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for geotechnical works. We work for leading UK&I and international clients and have commissions of varying scale across all sectors, including major national infrastructure projects such as Thames Tideway, HS2, Neom (Saudi Arabia), Hinkley Point C nuclear power station deep temporary excavations and onshore tunnels, Lower Thames Crossing Ground Investigations, and the Eden Brows landslide scheme.

AECOM’s Basingstoke office is a long-established hub with a varied and interesting workload and with a mix of office and site-based work. It hosts approximately 20 Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental staff, including Civil Engineers, Geologists and Environmental Scientists. In addition to input into some of the major schemes above, recent and ongoing locally based work includes:

  • All aspects of geotechnical design for a number of major highways schemes including integral and semi-integral bridge design, secant and bored pile wall design, reinforced earth design, ground improvement and numerous other aspects of geotechnical design

  • ongoing specialist support to Local Authorities, ranging from the investigation and remediation design of failing slopes and retaining walls, to rockface inspection and remediation, to the investigation of major landslides affecting highway infrastructure

  • a wide variety of work in quarries including backfilling and assessment of rockface and overburden stability, remedial design of failing slopes, and the design of new railway connections into quarries

  • ongoing geotechnical support to Contractors in the rail sector, including the inspection of rockfaces and failing earthworks and their remediation with a wide variety of techniques in the rail environment

  • various other projects supporting a wide range of other AECOM Business Lines, both based in Basingstoke and more widely.

  • Nationally, our Ground Engineering team comprises some 190 staff, with close integration across the team to share knowledge and provide a broad range of opportunities for staff within the UK and overseas.

We require ambitious team players with the technical skills, knowledge and experience to take day to day responsibility for delivery of projects and tasks, ensuring technical quality and adherence to budget and programme. The positions will suit those who can work with a good degree of day to day independence on tasks including desk study/feasibility through ground investigation and interpretation to final design.

Minimum Requirements

  • You will be an engineering geologist with working knowledge and practice in site walkovers, desk studies, ground investigations, soil and rock slope stability analysis and ideally in design of foundations and retaining walls and soil and rock slope remediation works.

  • Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills working closely and collaboratively with colleagues in a multi-disciplinary environment

  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write desk studies, technical reports, specifications and contract documents

  • Good knowledge of soil and rock parameter selection

  • Analytical capabilities and experience in the use of relevant data management and design software. Experience in gINT/Holebase and in numerical modelling using UDEC/3DEC/SLIDE would be advantageous

  • Experience with relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications

  • Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK on a regular basis and to occasionally undertake short assignments overseas

  • You will have a valid UK driving licence
