Position Title Archaeology Field Technician II

Job Summary

The Central Midwest Area Cultural Resource Division of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Archaeological Technician for temporary employment with our Bismarck, North Dakota office. However, the candidate could be working on various projects in the Upper Mid-West, or elsewhere on the Great Plains, including surveys, evaluative testing and data recovery projects, depending on staffing needs throughout the Central Region. This is a part-time variable position, meaning, work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis.

This position reports to the Field Director or Archaeological Supervisor.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

• Conducting archaeological survey, shovel testing, investigations/excavations; screening and describing soil deposits.

• Documenting archaeological and historic resources. Must be able to learn to take accurate field notes; draw accurate profiles and plan view sketches

• The position may require completing site forms, narrative site descriptions, and written contributions to reports.

• Using a digital camera to photo-document artifacts, features, and sites and keeping an accurate photo log.

• Processing artifacts (wash, mark and catalog) and performing basic analysis of artifacts

• Consulting with supervisor concerning unusual problems and developments

Minimum Requirements

• 2+ years of relevant experience

• Must possess a valid driver's license

• Clean driving record

• Knowledge of field survey and excavation techniques, ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, properly fill out field and laboratory forms, perform extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt

• Basic knowledge of GIS applications, Microsoft applications

• Flexibility to travel overnight, including out of state travel, for up to 3+ months at a time

• Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude

• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow specific instructions

• Ability to effectively express his or herself orally and in writing to other project staff

• Ability to write well, including artifact, feature, site, and landscape descriptions

• Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office applications

• Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to extensively perform bending, kneeling standing and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs

• Must have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, prolonged walking and standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions in remote locations

• Due to the nature of this work, qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test

• Due to the nature of this work, U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Anthropology, History, Museum Studies, or related field and have attended an archaeological field school

• General familiarity with cultural resource management protocols and processes, including Section 106 and NEPA compliance

• Experience with large-scale cultural resources survey projects is preferred

• Some experience with conducting laboratory analysis of both prehistoric and historic material is preferred

• Experience with data collection using a handheld GPS unit is preferred

• CPR/First Aid training is preferred, but not required
