Are you an ambitious and motivated Transport Planner with skills in business case development, scheme appraisal, and economic development? Do you have a passion for identifying sustainable solutions to transport problems and helping to make a difference in responding to climate emergencies and creating a lasting legacy? Would you like to work on high-profile projects with organizations such as National Highways, Sub-National Transport Bodies, public transport providers, and Local Highway Authorities? If the answer is yes, we are looking to enhance and grow our Midlands team with an individual with a strong technical background who shares our enthusiasm to find optimal solutions to meet clients’ needs in responding to increasingly complex and diverse transport challenges.

You will work within a large, collaborative team and be responsible for the delivery of a diverse range of transport projects across the Midlands and the UK. Your role will be planning-focused, working with private and public sector clients, and providing technical transport and planning advice. This could include work on business cases, strategic transport studies, Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans, electric vehicle studies, Monitoring, and Evaluation Plans, and public transport strategies. As the industry re-adjusts and response to new challenges posed in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has never been a more exciting time to join the team.

In this role, you will work primarily within our Transport Planning team with Transportation, although you will also have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from a range of other disciplines in our delivery of holistic and multi-disciplinary services to our clients. We have an established and vibrant community of consultant transport planners amongst which you will work. You will also be expected to provide some mentoring and technical advice for more junior team members. As such, you will need to have the knowledge and demonstrable experience of a range of transport planning skills (as listed below) and ideally with some experience in project management and supervisory skills. We expect excellent written and oral communication skills which we will continue to develop.

Job Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Analyse complex data sets to inform transport planning projects.

  • Deliver technical advice to support the development of transport strategies for clients

  • Prepare technical reports including active travel strategies and public transport strategies, as well as business cases for a range of different transport interventions

  • Input ideas to project team meetings to find optimal solutions which meet the requirements of the client’s brief and support at client meetings to communicate findings.

  • Provide support to our graduates and apprentices.

Minimum Requirements

You will be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Experience in the preparation of technical reports

  • Flexibility in working on a variety of different projects which will require you to use a range of different skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to communicate and present confidently to a range of audiences

  • Familiarity with financial aspects of projects and can monitor progress

  • Questions and challenges conventional methodologies and offers up new ideas and solutions

  • Actively seeks out colleagues and clients to agree project scopes, roles and responsibilities

  • Ability to recognise risks associated with a project and provide guidance on mitigation and controls

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in an analytical subject such as Engineering, Geography, Planning, Mathematics, Economics or similar.

  • Membership of (or working towards) a relevant professional institution for example ICE, RTPI, TPS, CILT or CIHT.

  • An active interest in the field of transport planning, who keeps abreast of the latest developments in what is a fast-paced and dynamic industry.

  • Ability to work across disciplines, forming strong networks with other colleagues across the business

  • Creativity in identifying innovative approaches and solutions to a transport problem
