Job Summary

As a Principal Flood Risk Consultant you will be working on and project managing a diverse range of flood risk management appraisal schemes that deliver sustainable benefits to communities and the environment through both public and private sector clients. You will be responsible for the management and development of a team and also be expected to have an input into the training, development and growth of the wider Birmingham Water Resources Team. You will be instrumental in planning strategic growth, innovation and developing new clients and winning work.

Job Duties

Including but not limited to:

Project Management (client facing and internal management systems);

Delivering a portfolio of projects;

Developing flood risk management solutions through option appraisal and production of business cases;

Winning work – managing and writing bids and proposals;

Developing new clients / market sectors;

Training and development of junior staff ; and

Providing Quality Assurance.

Technical work will include (but not limited to):

  • Identification, conceptual design and appraisal of flood risk management options;

  • Overseeing / Management of data / GIS;

  • Developing innovative solutions for presentation of data / results to clients and wider project engagement;

  • Report writing; and

  • Business Case development.

You will be expected to take a proactive approach to managing client relationships, clarifying expectations, success criteria and outcome measures in order to meet their requirements and deliver successful projects.

You will also be required to support wider AECOM business lines and develop and strengthen internal AECOM cross-sector relationships.

Specific Skills Required

The role will require the candidate to possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills / knowledge of:

  • Environment Agency WEM Framework;

  • Flood Risk Management Appraisal and Business Case development;

  • Flood Risk Assessments, Strategic Flood Risk Assessments, Surface Water Management Plans, Flood Risk Management Options Appraisal;

  • Knowledge of 1D and 2D hydraulic modelling (competent with industry standard software including ISIS / Flood Modeller, Estry and TUFLOW);

  • Technical expertise in GIS packages such as MapInfo / Arc GIS / QGIS;

  • Knowledge and understanding of channel hydraulic behaviour and flood risk management structures;

  • Experience in quality assurance and reviewing hydrological / hydraulic models, reports, business cases and recommending solutions for overcoming problems;

  • Commercial awareness and the ability to manage and deliver projects to time and budget;

  • Team management experience;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in environmental / earth sciences or civil engineering;

  • A flexible and dynamic approach and mind-set to respond to changing market requirements;

Minimum Requirements

  • Ideally the candidate will have practical experience of the aspects listed in the Specific Skills Required section above and have been working in a relevant organisation within a role(s) that utilises these skills. Ideally we would require a minimum of 8 years relevant experience.

Additional Comments

It would be beneficial if you:

  • Are chartered or working towards Chartership with an appropriate institution; and

  • Have an M.Sc. / Ph.D in relevant technical areas.
