Ground, Energy and Transactions Business Unit Lead
This is a rare opportunity to lead the largest Ground Engineering team in UK&I, who were recently shortlisted in 4 categories in the 2021 Ground engineering Awards – Consulting firm of the Year, Health and Safety, Community engagement and UK Project with a geotechnical value of between £1M and £3M. We have a team of circa 200 staff located across 20 offices in the UK and Ireland.
From building defences to protect the residents of Jeddah from storm events for generations to come, to helping create the first liquefied natural gas receipt terminal in Costa Azul, AECOM’s Ground Engineering specialists help to deliver some of the world’s most technically demanding projects.
The Ground Engineering Team works across a huge spectrum of clients and sectors – ranging from simple ground investigations to large civil infrastructure projects in both the UK and abroad –Neom scheme in Saudi Arabia – 100-mile-long mega city of connected communities. Lower Thames Crossing ground investigation – largest single ground investigation in UK. Hinkley Point C – infrastructure and slope stability/rock excavation. Network Rail, Coal Authority - working closely with internal structural engineers, Tunnels team, Transportation and Water colleagues

The postholder will be a role model of excellent leadership skills and will work consistently to embed corporate values including, but not limited to, those relating to EDI, culture, and behaviours. As a key member of the E&GE leadership team they also have responsibility for Profit and Loss.
A key focus of the role is to ensure that operations, resources and assets are integrated effectively and efficiently across the Business Unit, devising and implementing a strategy to ensure that the Business Unit has a leading position in the external marketplace.
The postholder is expected to work to ensure that the teams are positioned and able to adapt to predicted market changes in both energy and brownfield redevelopment. The role is also critical to ensure the teams have strong links across UK&I, Europe and internationally, both with clients and also other AECOM teams.
The GETS Business Unit Director will:
Be the primary point of contact for the Business Unit;
Have a strong understanding and proven track record in, and experience of, technical expertise within the Remediation, Ground Engineering or Energy Business Unit;
Drive safety, integrity, ethics, operational and financial performance within the Business Unit;
Work with the Operations team to ensure that the overall delivery of projects within the Business Unit is on budget, on programme and to the technical requirements agreed with our clients, and is also consistent with the agreed methodology and quality standards;
Provide leadership to the Business Unit leadership team to ensure that key deliverables including revenue, profit and data quality and cash management are met, identify performance issues and implement associated recovery plans as are appropriate;
Prepare and lead delivery of the Business/Commercial plan for the Business Unit;
Select and develop an operating structure with an effective leadership team within the Business Unit, including a strong succession plan, to ensure that Business Leaders manage teams effectively and respond quickly to opportunities and/or any problems including adverse market and performance trends;
Strive to ensure that the practice areas within the Business Unit become world class, sustainable and recognized as leading in their practice in the region through working closely with the regional and global Practice Leads for Remediation, Ground Engineering and Energy;
Devise and implement a business development and client relationship plan by maintaining an excellent understanding of Business Unit needs across the region;
Work closely with Business Development Sector Leads to support client development and growth opportunities, through winning business and effective use of client feedback;
Work with other nominated leaders in the region to raise the brand awareness of Environment and Ground Engineering;
Maximize the opportunities within the business for employees in all practice areas in the Business Unit by ensuring that all have career development plans as appropriate and that actions are planned to support these and ensuring full participation in the performance management process including the promotion of a diverse and inclusive workforce;
Ensure that the Business Unit has the appropriate talent and resource to deliver projects effectively and meet growth plans by recruiting, developing and retaining its employees;
Develop and implement initiatives which are directed towards maximising employee development, morale and performance in the business unit and promote collaboration across all Business Units;
Maintain a programme of communication across the business unit to ensure that all employees remain fully informed of corporate, end market and regional initiatives;
Promote enhanced technical excellence and knowledge management within the Business Unit;
Ensure compliance and best practice with all company procedures, particularly those associated with quality, risk, financial management, health and safety and core values;
Promote and ensure compliance with regard to both worker, workplace and project Health & Safety and ensure that employees within the Business Unit are competent to carry out their duties safely;
Support the development of the other End Markets.
Proven track record of managing operations and teams in a multi-disciplinary consultancy company.
Strong understanding of the UK&I market including the turnkey market.
Demonstrable experience managing project budgets and overseeing the delivery of large-scale projects and programs.
Demonstrable creativity, foresight and judgement, ability to anticipate and solve both routine and unusual project delivery, technical and client challenges.
Commercial acumen, evidence of delivering complex and demanding solutions to clients.
Strong and effective interpersonal skills including relationship building and communication at all levels and working collaboratively across the organisation; ability to listen to all points of view while still being persuasive.
Demonstrable teambuilding and influencing skills; unquestioned integrity; and the experience, confidence, and stature to effectively address major client needs and challenges.
Collaborator and mentor.
Degree qualification in a relevant discipline (engineering, science, business) is essential.
Post graduate business qualification is desirable.
Professionally accredited with the relevant professional body.
