As a result of our continued success, we are seeking a Environmental Scientist to join our established Environment and Planning Team based in our Altrincham/ Birmingham offices with specific responsibility for undertaking and assisting with water environment impact assessments for a wide range of development projects. The projects undertaken by the team cover all development sectors with a wide technical scope and geographical locations.

Our Environment and Planning Team includes a number of staff with specialisms in hydrology, water quality/ sediment monitoring and analysis, hydromorphology, Water Framework Directive (WFD) compliance appraisals, and water environment impact assessments. We are now looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical background in the aquatic environment that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

You will provide water environment inputs to locally and nationally significant development schemes that are progressing through all types of consenting regimes (including Development Consent Orders), working with high profile clients such as HS2 Ltd, National Grid, Highways England, Network Rail, Shell, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), power companies, local authorities and many others.

We have provided water environment assessment inputs into a wide range of development and infrastructure projects. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:

  • Doncaster Sheffield Airport Logistic Centre;

  • Nent Haggs Minewater Treatment Scheme;

  • M42 Junction 6 Improvements;

  • Melton Mowbray Distributor Road;

  • Southampton Ponds Improvement Project;

  • Birmingham Airport Water Quality Analysers Feasibility Study.

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Project accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:

  • Water and sediment quality field monitoring and field investigations;

  • Providing input to and leading water environment impact assessments in accordance with best practice guidance. To cover developments from across a wide spectrum of sectors, including highways, railways, utilities pipelines, power generation facilities, wind farms, residential, commercial and industrial developments;

  • Development of water impact avoidance and mitigation strategies;

  • Input to WFD compliance appraisals;

  • Ability to work collaboratively and iteratively within multi-disciplinary project teams;

  • Establishing strong working relationships with internal project teams, particularly within AECOM’s Environment and Water divisions;

  • Statutory and non-statutory stakeholder engagement and management;

  • Project management, technical proposal preparation and report writing.

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role we're looking for applications from experienced professionals who have worked in a similar role. The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience of undertaking water environment impact assessments for development projects;

  • A good level of understanding of water environment systems and interplay between various water disciplines (water quality, hydrology, flood risk, hydromorphology, hydrogeology, drainage etc.);

  • Ideally, experience of undertaking HAWRAT Assessments (HD45/09);

  • Ideally experience of field surveying (e.g. water quality sampling, pollution monitoring, lake coring);

  • Experience of working with water environment regulators and experience of stakeholder engagement and consultation;

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills;

  • Ideally experience of bid preparation and drafting technical proposals;

  • Strong project management skills;

  • Excellent report writing;

  • Strong communication skills; and

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Be qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in relevant subject (e.g. geography, environmental science, hydrology, hydro-chemistry, ecology etc.);

  • Ideally have an MSc or PhD in a relevant subject (as described above);

  • Be a member of an appropriate professional body (e.g. CIWEM, IEMA etc.);

  • Hold a valid UK driving licence.
