Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a strong and accomplished Transport Planning team and to work on leading modelling projects which are at the forefront of the Transport Planning industry. As an experienced Transport Consultant, you will join a 25+ persons strong Transport Planning Team in Birmingham.

The AECOM Birmingham transport planning and modelling team is committed to solving real-world transport problems. Whether that is finding solutions to complex traffic issues on some of the UK’s largest construction projects or in delivering solutions for our local clients in the Midlands to address the impact of developments on the transport network – as we are doing across the region.

The way in which we travel is changing rapidly so modelling transport has become more challenging. Future uncertainties such as the advent of Mobility as a Service, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles and the results of transport decarbonisation policy areas require new methods of modelling. Evolving methods for modelling are creating alternative ways of harnessing big data sources and translating this into usable modelling tools.

  • Building the Midlands Regional Traffic Model version 2 for National Highways.

  • Traffic Modelling, Appraisal and Business Case development for the City East Gateway scheme for the City of Wolverhampton Council.

  • Tap on Tap off (bus operation) Business Case for West of England Combined Authority.

  • All-Purpose Trunk Road Route Optimisation Study for National Highways to address safety and delay on the network.

  • A46 Lincoln and A38 Trerulefoot to Liskeard Junctions PCF Stage 0 Studies for National Highways.

  • Planning and modelling support for the National Highways Spatial Planning Framework as part of their development control responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities:

As a Transport Consultant, you will be an important member of our Transport Planning team in Birmingham. You will work with the team leader and project managers to specify and deliver transport planning projects for a range of different clients. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Analysing data to inform transport planning projects

  • Using GIS to present data

  • Undertaking transport modelling to inform scheme appraisal and business case development

  • Undertaking the economic appraisal of transport schemes

  • Supporting the delivery of Business Cases for a range of different transport proposals

  • Supporting at client meetings to communicate findings

  • Supporting at stakeholder events

  • Preparing other technical reports

  • Providing support to our graduates and apprentices

Minimum Requirements

  • An analytical mind and background with a broad understanding of current transportation trends and issues

  • Experience in transport modelling with some experience in SATURN, VISUM or CUBE

  • Understanding of the business case process and TAG guidance

  • Data analysis and processing skills

  • Excellent numeracy and communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively individually or as part of a project team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant degree.

  • Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution such as CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE.
