Job Description

AECOM are currently looking to recruit an Associate Director to lead the Development Planning and Management team based in Birmingham and Chesterfield. We are looking to enhance and grow our teams with individuals with a strong technical background that shares our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

Our Development Planning and Management team works on projects in the Midlands and the UK. These are frequently multi-disciplinary projects undertaken in collaboration with colleagues from across AECOM.

Our team works with private and public sector clients, architects, planners and other property professionals across all sectors. We undertake Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, support our Environmental colleagues in preparing Environmental Impact Assessments, and provide key transport inputs to develop Travel Demand Management Strategies, Preliminary Designs, Spatial Plans and Masterplans. Our clients include master developers, landowners, housebuilders, retailers, health trusts, Homes England, universities, local authorities and contractors.

Job Responsibilities

People

  • Lead the team based across the Birmingham and Chesterfield offices;

  • Mentor and support the development of team members;

  • Coordinate resourcing meetings to allocate resources to projects and to ensure deadlines are achieved;

  • Undertake performance reviews and helping to identify career plans for the team;

  • Drive our inclusion and well-being strategies by instilling a culture of respect and care within your team, role modelling behaviours aligned to these strategies.

  • Build a diverse and inclusive workforce by recruiting and retaining the best talent and nurturing the next generation of leaders who will do the same; and

  • Lead with empathy, respect and understanding, actively seeking out diverse points of view and creating a psychologically safe environment where these points of view can thrive.

Growth

  • Expand the development planning business and take responsibility for delivering business targets;

  • Liaise with current and proposed clients to develop repeat and new business for the company;

  • Establish strong working relationships with other internal teams within AECOM, particularly the development planning teams across the UK, the Environment and Masterplanning teams and the wider local transport planning team; and

  • Prepare detailed client briefs or fee proposals for client submission and contribute to major bids.

Projects

  • Take a leading role in the delivery of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, Masterplans and other technical reports to support the development of transport strategies for local authority clients.

  • Take overall responsibility for delivery of projects to contractual arrangements and the financial agreed outcome;

  • Liaise with senior stakeholders, including the clients’ project directors (or equivalent) to resolve issues early and safeguard our interests;

  • Present to clients and key stakeholders in a professional, responsive and client-focused manner;

  • Act as a Project Manager/Director (once accredited) as necessary, including monitoring financial performance;

  • Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief;

  • Attend Project Progress meetings along with necessary client meetings;

  • Provide technical knowledge and leadership experience across a range of developments;

  • Undertake Health and Safety duties, including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the project team members and fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design.

  • Supervise work carried out by other members of the team, ensuring that it is to the appropriate technical standard and is delivered to programme; and

  • Be a point of contact for clients, architects, planners and other professionals throughout the project.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a proven background in work-winning and wider business development acumen and outcomes. From a technical perspective, experience in development-related transport analysis and assessment, with wider experience in project management and mentoring and coaching skills, is essential.

  • Extensive experience in the preparation of development-related Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, Access Studies, preliminary design and transport-related master planning

  • High degree of competence in project management and commercially aware.

  • A proven record of dealing with clients, local authorities and other regulatory bodies.

  • Experience in understanding client briefs, developing fee proposals and effectively delivering project work.

  • Excellent presentation and technical writing skills are required.

  • Have a sound commercial awareness and demonstrate the importance of effective financial management.

  • Have experience in business development and managing client expectations.

  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (CIHT, CILT, TPS, ICE, IPI, etc).

Prefered Qualifications/ Not Essential:

  • Experience in the preparation of Proof of Evidence and giving evidence at Planning Inquiries.

  • A degree in an analytical subject such as engineering, geography, mathematics, economics, planning or similar.

  • A Masters's degree in a relevant subject is desirable.
