Our Highways team currently has a vacancy for an Engineer with highways design experience, to work on local, national and international schemes, based out of our Bedford office.
The successful candidate will join AECOM’s established highways business which continues to expand following several major project wins.
The highways business in Bedford has significant skills, experience and established culture in the delivery of all types of highway schemes; from major highways projects for Clients including Highways England, Welsh Government and Local authorities to trunk road maintenance schemes through the South East for Highways England.
Our modern offices are located in Bedford town centre and a short walk from the rail station and our teams have an established reputation for quality and delivery. We are looking to enhance and enlarge these teams with people who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination.
Our client list includes Highways England, Welsh Government, Oxfordshire County Council, Buckinghamshire County Council, Kent County Council and other Local Authorities in the South East and various contractors.

Highways England Road Investment Strategy programme for East and Midlands, including A46 Coventry Junctions, A46 Binley and A46 Walsgrave Improvement
A229 Bluebell Hill Improvement
A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet Improvement,
Didcot Garden Town schemes
South East Aylesbury Link Road,
Transport for London schemes
OD East Capital Delivery Programme determination.
Work under the direction of Principal/ Senior Engineers to ensure that the job/ project accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards
Assist in the provision of technical inputs, across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering
Undertake a variety of tasks providing as an individual or through team effort, a range of design and written deliverables
Show technical competence and through experience, gather and take on board the skills of others in computer-based applications and tasks including the use of software such as Open Roads Civils 3D, Project Wise, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MSProject
Undertake project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects, as appropriate to the grade
Take an assistant role on projects within a particular skill area – e.g. drainage, pavements, geometric layouts etc.
Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required
Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required
Liaise with sub-consultants and external parties, as required
Act as a mentor to others
Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office disciplines and projects
Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment
Experience and proficiency in two or more of the key areas;
project management or asset management
pavement design and refurbishment,
signs and road markings,
Management of design and delivery of highway maintenance schemes
Knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges
Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment, operating across a matrix of projects.
Experience of preparing written work
Experience of preparing for and attending meetings with clients and/or statutory consultees.
A degree qualified civil engineering graduate with relevant experience, preferably working in a highways design environment in either new build or maintenance
HNC/HND qualified civil engineer with extensive demonstrable experience, preferably working in a highways design environment in either new build or maintenance, preferably with EngTech status and working towards
