Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for an Associate with experience of bridge design, inspection, assessment and refurbishment schemes, to join our Bedford Bridges and Structures team.

Our Bedford office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge and other transportation structures projects, throughout the UK. The team provides input to projects throughout the infrastructure lifecycle from feasibility, preliminary and detailed stage designs for new assets to inspections, assessments, maintenance and refurbishment of existing assets.

Current projects include a major UK 5 year rail network infrastructure framework assessment contract, a major highway bypass, special inspection of a wide variety of post-tensioned bridges, and assessment of some of the UK’s most complex existing structures.

As an Associate, reporting directly to the Bedford Rail, Bridges and Structures Office Lead, you will provide regular support to the management and local leadership including the following:

  • Maintaining and seeking to improve the excellent health, safety and welfare culture in the team, through regular briefings and training as well as ensuring that everyone engages proactively with our safety culture.

  • You will be responsible for interfacing with and supporting the Departmental Resource Manager and Office Lead on balancing resource against projects, and providing financial and resource forecasting for both awarded work and future opportunities to senior leadership on a regular basis.

  • Project manage rail and/or road bridge schemes from inspection and assessment, feasibility through to detailed design for some of our most challenging projects. To include programme and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.

  • Planning and developing engineering tasks concerned with unique or controversial problems. This involves taking an initiative on deep exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches.

  • Developing and maintaining liaison with other UK offices as well as leading on connections with the wider business.

  • Improve the quality culture within the team by taking on a Lead Verifier role on projects, as well as driving improvements in self-checking and in-team checking.

  • Responsible for reviewing and signing off Technical Approval documentation.

  • Excellent technical and communication skills; both verbal and written.

  • Mentoring graduate engineers on our approved ICE Training Scheme in their progress to becoming Chartered Engineers.

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE.

  • Significant experience with bridge and related structural inspection, assessment and design schemes.

  • Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

  • Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • High-level technical skills in inspection, assessment and design and ability to lead teams.

  • Experience of Eurocodes, British Standards and assessment codes including DMRB and Network Rail standards.

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit, plus structural analysis software - LUSAS or SBD preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

A current clean driving license and/ or willingness to travel throughout the UK to visit sites.
