We are currently recruiting for an Experienced Engineer or Senior Engineer specialising in blast and security design work to join our Structural Engineering discipline. The location of this position is flexible in the UK but with Basingstoke or Nottingham as the home office. This particular opportunity has arisen in our Building + Places Business Unit which focusses on projects within the Built Environment.

Our Engineers have an established track record of successfully delivering projects of varying scale and complexity for both private and public clients. Our modern office environment has excellent transport links, including car parking and comprises a vibrant and diverse mix of sectors and disciplines. We are now looking to enhance and grow the structures team with individuals with a sound specialist technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload worldwide.

The Structural Engineering discipline workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections and construction support on a wide range of building developments and heavy civil engineering projects principally in the defence, education and commercial/residential sectors. With all our blast engineering work, our objective is to provide maximum additional value to the project through efficient delivery of this specialised work whilst collaborating with other professionals on the project team.

A list of some of the current projects includes:

  • Work for the MoD to ensure that buildings can appropriately accommodate blast loads from both accidental detonation of explosives stored on site and provide protection from a VBIED.

  • Blast engineering for new Mass Transit Infrastructure and structures in the built environment. This work includes codified and CFD modelling of shock loads, specification of materials and modelling of structural support systems to check the structural capacity when exposed to blast loading.

As an Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Engage with clients to help define requirements, present proposals, discuss project progress and assist with presentations of project results.

  • Undertake technically challenging projects with minimum supervision within prescribed programme constraints.

  • Co-ordinate project delivery for internal and external clients.

  • Undertake structural engineering projects, by performing analyses and calculations as appropriate, along with preparing design reports for client submission. This includes blended FEA, CFD and supporting hand calculations to best practice methods and the latest thinking.

  • Help to supervise work undertaken by others, ensuring that it is carried out to the appropriate technical standard and that it is managed to programme and budget.

  • Have a desire to learn new skills, develop a specialist expertise and the ability to consider the wider engineering issues related to the analyses being undertaken.

  • Contribute to wider business development across the full spectrum of blast engineering.

Minimum Requirements

  • Demonstrable track record in the delivery of projects for clients, or the ability to demonstrate significant technical contribution towards project delivery

  • Chartered or actively working towards Chartered status with the ICE, IStructE or IMechE

  • Have a reasonable knowledge of appropriate blast and security design standards such as UFC 3-340-02 and reasonable experience of appropriate software for blast problems such as Air3D

  • Ability to deliver design solutions and successfully manage workload in a reliable manner

  • A highly motivated and conscientious individual with excellent communication skills

  • Willing to obtain MoD security clearance (SC level or higher)

  • A strong background in the use of analysis software and a high level of technical skills. Knowledge of LUSAS or comparable FEA software packages would be beneficial

  • You will have a current driving license and will be willing to travel to visit sites

  • Experience of working on heavy civil/structural engineering projects, and/or experience working on structures subject to extreme loads such as blast or impact would be advantageous.

  • Knowledge of the Eurocode Standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering. Candidates with a background in Applied Physics or similar and with suitable relevant experience may also be considered for the role.
