Job Summary

Our Traffic and Local Roads team have a vacancy for a Principal Traffic/ Highway Engineer in our Basingstoke office. Our large multi-discipline office is situated just a few minutes’ walk from the Station and the vibrant town centre which boasts a fantastic range of shopping and eating and drinking establishments. It is also just off the M3 by car with underground staff parking. Aecom offer flexible working and have offices in London and Southampton. We would consider the role on either a full or part-time basis and are happy to look at a range of different working patterns including compressed weeks and occasional home working.

The Traffic and Local Roads team provides concept, preliminary and detailed design and network modelling on a wide range of projects for local authorities and contractors plus supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have a specialised traffic and highways interface.

The successful candidate will be joining a new team that will be involved in the winning and delivery of projects and services to a range of both local and national clients including:

  • Local Authority Clients in the South East Region, UK and Ireland

  • Transport for London

  • London Highway Alliance Contract (North West and Central London)

  • Southwark Highways & Professional Services Contract

  • Midlands Highways Alliance

  • Private Contractors working on behalf of Local Authorities

We are therefore seeking candidates who are able to work flexibly across other AECOM offices as projects dictate to support the wider business.

Further, the role offers opportunities to work in AECOMs wider European, Middle East, India and Africa regions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed client briefs and fee proposals and contribute to major bids.

  • Support Senior Management of Local Roads team including with recruitment.

  • Develop new and existing client relationships.

  • Lead the design and assessment of a range of traffic engineering and local transport schemes, including preparation of design drawings, reports and technical notes.

  • Act as a Project Manager, following comprehensive training and successful accreditation on the AECOM project management systems, including monitoring quality, programme and financial, performance system.

  • Manage the career progression of line reports including mentoring and agreeing individual training plans.

  • Ensure the technical content and quality of all outputs are in line with the project brief, design regulations and standards, approving the work of others.

  • Share knowledge to ensure the wider team are up to date with current best practice, techniques and innovation.

  • Undertake Health & Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for team members and fulfilling all responsibilities for safety, health and environment in design.

Minimum Requirements

  • A successful track record in the management and delivery of a portfolio of traffic engineering and local transport schemes through both preliminary and / or detailed design stages.

  • Experience of monitoring financial and programme performance

  • Multi-disciplinary project experience as project manager/ task leader.

  • Excellent technical and communication skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate detailed understanding and application of relevant design standards and regulations.

  • Specialist traffic engineering knowledge.

  • Appreciation of traffic modelling

  • 3D Design (MX or Civils 3D)

  • Urban Design/Streetscape.

  • Project Management qualifications (e.g. APM or PRINCE2)

  • Highways asset management and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A relevant degree or HND and a Chartered Engineer or membership of a professional institution and working towards an appropriate Chartered status.
