Our Ground Engineering (GE) team in Basingstoke is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer, experienced in leading and providing specialist input to a range of civil engineering projects such as highways, railways, residential and commercial developments, harbours, coastal defence, infrastructure and flood defences.
To be successful, the candidate will have extensive relevant experience, be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the industry with a proven track record in the delivery of technical projects and be fully conversant with the standards that apply throughout the industry. We are looking for an ambitious team player with leadership qualities, good technical skills, knowledge and experience who is keen to take responsibility for team leadership, mentoring of junior staff and control of project budget and programme. The position will suite a person who wishes to assist in the development of innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding. The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic team.
Our Ground Engineering team in the UK comprises around 190 staff, providing a comprehensive geotechnical service. The Basingstoke office traditionally has a diverse range of interesting projects in the UK and overseas and over nearly 100 years has built a reputation for successfully delivering ground engineering schemes in the UK and many other countries. We are looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical ability that share our enthusiasm and determination to deliver a quality service within a growing workload.
The team provides services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design and construction supervision on a wide range of contracts and supports other AECOM business lines on projects with Ground Engineering elements. Our clients are from the private and public sector. Our leading UK clients include Highways England, Network Rail, HCA, BP, Shell, Thames Water, Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers.

Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract.

Job Responsibilities :
The appropriate level of technical expertise and experience is required in order for you to take responsibility for the following types of task:
Preparation of expressions of interest and priced technical proposals including attendance at internal tender meetings and external interviews with clients.
Scoping, tendering and administering ground investigations and acting as the Engineer.
Design of geotechnical works including slopes, foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, strengthened earthworks and ground improvement.
Production of geotechnical reporting, specification and contract documentation.
Reporting to the GE team leader in Basingstoke you will interface directly with engineering geologist and geotechnical engineers within the team from graduates to directors and with other internal design teams across AECOM’s wide compass of disciplines.
You will have strong development skills and the technical ability, knowledge and competence to provide guidance and teaching to others, particularly junior staff, if and when required.
Ability to work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary design team, to ensure work packages are delivered on time and within budget.
Establishing strong working relationships and ensuring regular liaison with other internal teams.
Understand and implement the AECOM Project Management procedures including monthly progress and budget reviews of projects.
Carry out regular technical reviews in accordance with the company Quality Management System.
As a Principal Geotechnical Engineer, you will have a proven track record in the successful technical delivery of projects.
Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills working closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients in a multi-disciplinary environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write clear and concise technical reports, specifications and contract documents.
Strong analytical capabilities and proficient in the use of relevant design software. Experience in numerical modelling using PLAXIS, and knowledge of CAD and geotechnical software such as the Oasys suite, Settle3D and WALLAP would be advantageous.
Experience with relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications, in particular those of Network Rail and Highways England.
You should be willing to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods.
You will have a valid UK driving license.
A degree in Civil Engineering is essential.
An MSc in Geotechnical Engineering would be advantageous.
Chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent status is essential.
