Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Senior Environmental Planner for immediate employment in the Richmond Hill, Kitchener, Hamilton or Mississauga, ON office. This is a great opportunity for a Senior Environmental/EA Lead for Metrolinx and MTO work who is seeking more experience and responsibility combined with exposure to a wide variety of transit (i.e., Metrolinx) and MTO projects.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with and support Project Managers in carrying large scale EAs for MTO Projects and/or transit/Metrolinx projects and/or municipal transportation projects

  • Take responsibility for leading study tasks and small-scale studies, dealing with transit, and other transportation infrastructure

  • Function as Deputy Project Manager on larger projects

  • Lead/manage, organize, prepare for, attend, and document Environmental Team meetings

  • Oversee the development and implementation of consultation programs, including municipal, regulatory agency and First Nations engagement

  • Oversee and co-ordinate work of environmental specialists (i.e., fisheries, terrestrial, noise, air, archaeology, etc.)

  • Oversee dealing with Federal agencies, including CEAA

  • Be familiar with Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection Act and other relevant legislation

  • Oversee EA detail design implementation and Compliance Monitoring Programs

  • Collaborate with technical and professional staff across the company in completing assignments (either as task lead or as support to others)

  • Research, conceptualize, plan, design, document, present, and write reports related to transportation/transit EAs, planning, design and permitting

  • Liaise with clients by phone, email, and writing

  • Participate in study administration, through budgeting, invoicing, and staff management

  • Lead and mentor junior planning staff

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, or related field or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience

  • 10+ years of experience

  • Familiarity with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), MTO’s Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities Process, Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Process, Ontario Environmental Assessment (EA) Act, and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA), and the IEA Process

  • Knowledge of other relevant Ontario Legislation and Provincial Policy (i.e., the Planning Act, the Greenbelt Act, etc.)

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to work well with people including mentoring junior/intermediate staff

  • Ability to bring in new business through existing or future contacts is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Full membership in Ontario Professional Planners Institute and Canadian Institute of Planners (RPP and MCIP)

  • Existing client/working relationships with MTO, Metrolinx and municipalities in the GGH

  • Approved status for MTO Class EA and/or IEA work

  • Keen interest in business development and key client/account management

  • Fluency in written and spoken French is an asset
