Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Transportation Planning Project Manager for employment in the Arlington, VA office.

The Arlington-based transportation practice is comprised of engineers, planners, architects, economists, travel demand forecasters, and support staff and is responsible for conducting a variety of planning and preliminary design/engineering studies for multimodal initiatives for local, state, and federal clients in the Washington, DC area. Example projects include alternatives assessments, feasibility studies, corridor studies, regional/statewide plans, environmental studies (NEPA documentation), facility planning/design, and TOD/station-area plans.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Transportation technical tasks

  • Analyzes and recommends transportation system improvements based on technological change and economic, population, land use, and traffic projections

  • Analyzes data from modeling software, geographic information systems or associated databases

  • Develops and tests new methods and models of transportation, economic, and environmental analysis

  • Communicates complex transportation technical information in clear, engaging and creative ways to a variety of audiences

  • Collaborates with engineers to research, analyze, or resolve complex transportation design issues

  • Develops design ideas for new or improved transport infrastructure, including transit stations and alignments, pedestrian projects, bicycle facilities, complete streets, highways, and car parking areas

  • Reviews development plans for transportation system effects, infrastructure requirements, and compliance with applicable transportation regulations

  • Assists or leads environmental and NEPA-related projects and tasks, including EIS, EA, and CE documentation with FTA, FRA, and FHWA as lead agencies

  • Prepares presentation materials and facilitates meetings with client staff, agency boards, and commissions and elected officials

  • Participates in public meetings and hearings to explain planning proposals, and gather feedback from those affected by projects, or achieve consensus on project designs

Task and project management

  • Manages technical tasks and projects, including managing task and project teams, presenting to and working with a range of clients, monitoring project budgets and schedules, developing technical approaches and executing work, assisting with quality control, and coordinating among technical disciplines

  • Serves as deputy project manager, further develop project management skills, and obtain AECOM project management certification to serve as project manager of tasks in accordance with level of experience

Business development and pursuits

  • Helps maintain excellent client relationships through attentive service, project delivery, communication and professionalism, and anticipation of client needs

  • Assists business development activities through client agency and peer firm networking, internal and external knowledge sharing of AECOM technical experience and capabilities, and engaging with local and national industry trends and innovation

  • Assists project pursuit leaders and collaborate with other team members in developing proposal materials

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in planning, engineering, environmental science, public policy or a related field

  • 5+ years of experience in transportation planning or project management in a related field, such as transportation engineering or urban planning

  • Experience managing projects and coordinating technical disciplines for transportation agencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent document delivery skills: report organization and technical editing, development of information graphics, efficient delegation of assignments, and ability to work under multiple deadlines

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment and highly self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and demonstrate effective time management skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in planning, engineering, environmental science, public policy, or a related field

  • 8+ years of experience in transportation planning

  • Certification as American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), Project Management Professional Certification(PMP) or other relevant license

  • Demonstrated ability to manage project teams, supervise staff, and mentor professional colleagues in a diverse workplace

  • Experience using project management tools such as MS Project, Sharepoint, and other collaboration software
