AECOM Transportation Planner in Arlington, Virginia

Job Summary

AECOM is seeking candidates with a passion for transportation planning, working in a team-environment, and applying innovative technical approaches to multi-modal and mass transit-related projects. The position provides the opportunity for progressively responsible technical and task management roles across a range of projects.

AECOM’s Washington, DC-area transportation practice comprises planners, engineers, architects, economists, travel demand forecasters, and support staff and is responsible for conducting a variety of planning and preliminary design/engineering studies for multimodal initiatives for local, state, and federal clients in the region. Example projects include alternatives assessments, feasibility studies, corridor studies, regional/statewide plans, environmental studies (NEPA documentation), facility planning/design, TOD/station-area plans, transit service planning, bus electrification projects, and cross-disciplinary tasks with other business lines.

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Transportation technical tasks:

  • Collect, organize, review, and analyze social, economic, and physical data obtained through research, modeling tools, geographic information systems or associated databases.

  • Analyze collected data through programs such as Python or R.

  • Communicate complex transportation technical information through data visualizations and via text in clear, engaging and creative ways to a variety of audiences.

  • Write technical memoranda, reports, and presentations in order to communicate complex transportation technical information in clear, engaging and creative ways to a variety of audiences.

  • Perform site studies under supervision of Project Manager or other senior staff.

  • Collaborate with engineers to research, analyze, or resolve complex transportation design issues.

  • Develop design ideas for new or improved transport infrastructure, including transit stations and alignments, pedestrian projects, bicycle facilities, complete streets, connected and autonomous vehicles, highways, and parking.

  • Review development plans for transportation system effects, infrastructure requirements, and compliance with applicable transportation regulations.

  • Assist on environmental and NEPA-related projects and tasks, including EIS, EA, and CE documentation with FTA, FRA, and FHWA as lead agencies.

  • Coordinate and participate in public meetings, hearings, and other public outreach events to explain planning proposals, gather feedback from those affected by projects, or achieve consensus on project designs.

  • Task and project management:

  • Assist project managers and task leaders in the management of project technical tasks and project administration, including managing task and project teams, presenting to and working with a range of clients, monitoring project budgets and schedules, developing technical approaches and executing work, assisting with quality control, and coordinating among technical disciplines.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in planning, engineering, environmental science, public policy or a related field

  • Two (2) years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in transportation planning, urban and regional planning, environmental planning and engineering, civil engineering, or other professionally recognized equivalent discipline.

  • Preference for candidates who can use data analysis tools (e.g. Python, R, MATLAB).

  • Experience in stakeholder-driven planning contexts typical of North America.

  • Proficient in MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and ArcGIS.
