AECOM Counsel (Operations) in Arlington, Virginia

Job Summary

AECOM’s Design and Consulting Services legal department is actively seeking an experienced Counsel or Sr. Counsel (Operations) for immediate employment. The successful candidate will provide legal assistance to the East Region business team for the legal department, with a focus on construction, primarily from the design consultancy perspective. This position can be based in the Glen Allen, VA, Arlington, VA, Washington, DC or Raleigh, NC offices and offers hybrid remote/in-person working schedules, with the expectation to work in the office 2-3 days a week.

Job Summary

Responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to:

  • Actively and timely negotiating contractual issues (master service agreements, joint venture agreements, task orders etc.) including terms and conditions for standard of care, indemnity, delays and damages, penalties, insurance, contractual obligations, and interrelations with third parties.

  • Multi-tasking on time sensitive contract reviews, claims and/or litigation, and general advice requests.

  • Ensuring implementation of and team adherence to sound contract management and risk assessment policies.

  • Providing legal support to large programs including management and resolution of auto, general liability, and workers’ compensation claims while closely coordinating with the insurance department.

  • Responding to subpoenas and working with the internal e-discovery team as necessary.

  • Conducting training across different functional areas on terms and conditions, corporate policies and risk mitigation.

  • Preparing of reports, memoranda, correspondence, and other documents, as necessary.

  • Working collaboratively with diverse group of professionals, including the company’s executives, attorneys, risk and insurance managers, engineers, scientists and contracts staff, as well as the ability to work with attorneys for external clients and subcontractors.

  • Using online databases to document work and maintain updates.

  • Participating in legal department calls to provide updates on current matters and to assist with fair workload distribution between other team members.

  • Managing litigation and directing and overseeing the work of outside counsel.

  • Supporting the legal department’s goals for diversity, equity and inclusion goals amongst the legal department, the company, and outside vendors.

Minimum Requirements


Bachelor’s Degree and 6 years of experience as a practicing attorney

Sr. Counsel:

Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney

In addition to:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.

  • Admission to the bar in any state or the District of Columbia.

  • 2 years of experience working on construction related matters. Construction law experience may include drafting and negotiating agreements for engineering and/or other service-based contracts, and/or handling claims and litigation related to engineering and/or construction projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Managing Lawsuits for different types of claims, including Workers’ Compensation claims

  • Familiarity with OSHA investigations

  • Practical team player with the ability to professionally collaborate in a results-oriented environment.

  • Corporate transactional experience with the proven ability to lead transactions and projects.

  • Excellent judgment with the ability to balance competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.

  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, drafting, negotiation and written/verbal communication skills.

  • Detail-oriented and organized, exercising extreme attention to details and accuracy.

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify and resolve problems.

  • Ability to work effectively in a highly confidential environment with the highest standards of ethics and professional integrity.
