Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Welder Apprentice 1st Year to be based in our White City, Saskatchewan location.

This position will join or sever metals in beams, girders, vessels, piping and other metal components, make metal parts used in construction and manufacturing plants, and weld parts, tools, machines and equipment. They will develop patterns for projects or follow directions given in layouts, blueprints and work orders, clean, check for defects and shape component parts, sometimes using a cutting torch and weld parts together.

May include the following responsibilities:

  • Apply safe work practices according to Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) legislation, and WHMIS in relation to welding trade; select, describe the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe practices for climbing, lifting, rigging and hoisting in this trade; Describe the safety practices for hazardous materials and fire protection; understand the role of the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board and the network of industry committees that represent the trades and occupations in Alberta; safely use hand tools, power tools; safely assemble and use oxyfuel equipment; cut and gouge using the plasma arc and carbon arc cutting processes.

  • Read and interpret drawings, locate and record heat numbers, understand electrical concepts, types of metals and their characteristics; joints and weld types; interpret welding symbols, distortion and methods of control; identify weld faults.

  • Interpret and apply Welder Instruction Sheets/ Weld procedures. Selecting the correct welding rod and preheat temperatures based on the WIS/WP supplied to them

  • Comprehend and utilize trade math such as solving problems involving fractions and decimals, ratios, and geometric formulas; utilize both metric and imperial measures

This is a 6-1 shift position

Minimum Requirements

Current Registered Trade Apprentice

A valid Class 1 or Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract are requirements of this position

Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) Certification required

H2S Alive Certification required

First Aid Certification required

Ground Disturance,Whims, TDG Certification required

Preferred Qualifications

CSE (Confined Space Entry)

Fall Arrest and/or Fall Protection (OSSA issued ticket is the general requirement)

AWP – Aerial work platform
