We create comprehensive delivery solutions for water, wastewater and wet weather systems, desalination, water resources, water reuse, tunneling, and community infrastructure through traditional and alternative delivery services such as program management and design-build.

Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Principal Flood Risk Consultant Engineer to join our busy and expanding Water Team in St Albans, Hertfordshire. As part of a team that helped deliver landmark infrastructure projects globally including London and Rio Olympics and Thames Tideway, the role will provide the opportunity to lead a challenging mix of projects in flood risk management, water sensitive urban design, flood alleviation and a variety of multidisciplinary schemes. As a Principal Flood Risk Consultant/ Engineer you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a range of projects including Local Flood Risk Management Strategies, Strategic Flood Risk Assessments, Surface Water Management Plans, Flood Risk Assessment and Flood Alleviation schemes.

  • Work with Local Authorities, the Environment Agency, water companies and private sector clients.

  • Support the work of the other teams in the office including Development Infrastructure, Asset Management and Civil Engineering.

  • Contribute using your engineering, drainage, hydrology, water resources, hydraulics and broader environmental impact experience.

  • Supervise and provide technical support to other team members.

  • Some travel may be required, mainly in the UK.

Minimum Requirements

  • Proven track record of delivering successful projects and developing good working relationship with clients and key stakeholders.

  • Outline and detail design experience in water/flood risk management related projects.

  • Previous experience working in the Environment Agency frameworks (NEECA, SFRM and WEM).

  • Experience in flood risk management at site specific as well as strategic scale (e.g. PFRA, FRA, SWMP, SFRA, etc.).

  • Experience in the design of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) as well as a good understanding of the latest legislation/best practice.

  • Robust understanding of Flood Risk Management including current legislation, particularly the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.

Preferred experience:

  • Negotiation experience with key stakeholders such as the Environment Agency and Local Authorities.

  • Options appraisal of flood alleviation scheme and development of business case to Defra guidance

  • Understanding of hydraulic modelling including fluvial, potable and wastewater networks - capable of instructing/overseeing modellers based in other offices.

  • Knowledge of GIS packages (MapInfo, ArcView).

  • Experience in the production of tenders

  • Experience in leading project teams and mentoring Junior Staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated in a relevant subject such a Civil or Water Engineering, ideally to MEng level or equivalent.

  • Chartered Engineer with ICE, CIWEM or equivalent - or nearing Chartered status.
