Job Summary

AECOM is currently looking for a Principal Electro-Acoustics Consultant to focus on the delivery of Public Address Voice Alarm system design and commissioning. As a key member of our Electro-Acoustics team you can expect to work on a wide range of interesting and challenging projects, including some of the biggest developments and ventures in the UK and overseas. This individual can be based out of the Cambridge, St Albans, London Aldgate Tower, or London Wimbledon offices.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate considerable experience of managing, resourcing and delivering complex and challenging electro-acoustics projects, develop and market our electro-acoustics / PAVA expertise be a main point of contact for this work in the south of England and provide support to the Electro-Acoustics global lead. This Principal Electro-Acoustics Consultant could have previously worked as a Public Address Engineer, Voice Alarm Engineer, or Sound Systems Engineer.

The ideal candidate will have an impressive track record of working in electro-acoustics and have considerable experience of managing and delivering complex electro-acoustic/PAVA projects across a range of market sectors but with particular emphasis on transportation and sports related projects. They will have a strong background in electro-acoustics, be someone who is innovative and is willing to exploit the latest technology, but who can explain electro-acoustics to a non-technical audience. We are looking for someone with proven project management skills who can achieve efficiencies, increase our profit, and also help bring in new work and grow the business.

At AECOM we have one of the world’s largest Acoustics Teams, with approximately 50 full time specialists in the UK alone. We undertake a wide range of architectural, building and environmental and acoustics projects offering our clients technical support throughout a project lifecycle, from outline design and baseline surveys, through impact assessment during the detailed design and construction phases, to pre-completion testing and compliance monitoring. In addition we also offer a comprehensive range of electro-acoustics services including full and detailed design, documentation, testing and commissioning of all manner of audio systems and Public Address and Voice Alarm systems.

We have an impressive portfolio of major national and international projects. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:

  • Qatar 2022 World Cup Al Wakrah Stadium;

  • Japoma Sports Comlpex – Cameroon Stadium;

  • Waterloo Station Redevelopment;

  • Stansted Airport PAVA review;

  • Crossrail Paddington and Farrindon stations; plus

  • Various High Speed and conventional rail stations, airports and other large circulation spaces

Job Responsibilities:

The appropriate level of expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:

  • We are looking for an enthusiastic individual keen to work collaboratively and iteratively within an established acoustics/electro-acoustics team. The successful candidate would also work across wider multi-disciplinary design teams and be expected to establish strong working relationships with other internal teams.

  • The individual will have excellent technical, project management, presentation, leadership, report writing, commercial, personal organisation and communication skills, as well as being able to market and sell our services.

  • The role will have a strong focus on transportation related electro-acoustics

  • The successful candidate will be expected to work and maintain relationships with both internal and external clients; lead the electro-acoustic inputs to projects, manage the technical and financial aspect of projects and manage, mentor and teach junior staff.

  • They will be expected to undertake, oversee and technically review acoustic/electro-acoustic modelling software using packages such as CATT Acoustic/TUCT, EASE and ODEON.

  • They will also be expected to undertake measurements, data analysis, predictions and write and technically review reports on a range of acoustics projects.

  • The position will be based in the South East of England; however there will be the need to visit sites and meetings across the UK and work away from home for short periods, including overseas.

Minimum Requirements

  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are a recognised expert within the electro-acoustics community and be an experienced practitioner in the modelling, design, specification and commissioning of Public Address /Voice Alarm systems and Sound Systems in general.

  • The Candidate will have a good working knowledge of the relevant UK and International standards and regulations governing VA and Sound Systems for Emergency Purposes and will be familiar with relevant industry standard products and technologies. They will be capable of technically reviewing designs and specifications and new work proposals delegated by the team managers.

  • They will have project management experience and will be responsible for the day to day management of electro-acoustics consultancy services, supervision of junior modelling staff and assist in the development of their expertise in electro-acoustics (as and when required to assist in project delivery). The Candidate will be expected to be client-facing, capable of representing AECOM at project meetings and will be required to proactively develop client awareness of AECOM’s electro-acoustics and broader multi-disciplinary expertise.

  • They will be expected to win work both internally and externally by developing a portfolio of clients and contacts, proactively identify opportunities to cross sell services to internal and external clients and assist with the winning of sufficient work from internal and external clients to support self and to contribute to the team

  • Able to manage their own workload to make time available to accelerate the development of technical skills in more junior staff, including being available to provide on the job advice and instruction and to develop new lines of work or smarter ways of working.

  • The Candidate will report to the Electro-Acoustics Global Lead who will review/approve deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelors degree in acoustics or related subject

  • MIOA

  • Chartered status or evidence of working towards this

  • Full European/UK Driving licence
