Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Traffic/Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Engineer for immediate employment. The Traffic/ITS Engineer position will be responsible for drawing upon their existing and expanding depth of professional expertise to support the leading and/or completion of a wide range of tasks for a variety of AECOM Project Managers and Task Leads. Projects will be for a variety of clients and include services in both traditional and advanced traffic/ITS engineering ranging from advanced freeway/arterial ITS planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance; to traffic engineering studies, signal system design, corridor optimization and safety programs.

The general responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Professional Service Task Areas:

  • Systems engineering services to gather system needs, goals, objectives to define the operational concept, stakeholder roles, and system requirements

  • Traffic engineering services including design, review, system optimization, safety enhancement and other services

  • ITS engineering services including system planning, site design, plan development, specifications, details and construction phase support

  • Real-Time operation support services including the development of best practices for operation centers, piloting of industry trends/concepts, developing standard operating/maintenance procedures, decision support systems and performance monitoring systems

Task Management:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for the project management team to receive and deliver tasks that when combined with other tasks accomplish the overall goals of the project

  • Manage the overall task specific schedule, combined staff efforts and provide guidance to junior staff

  • Provide regular communication to project management staff on updates regarding task progress, proactively advise of issues, develop/execute risk mitigation strategies and maintain regular communication

  • Provide detailed checks of work completed by others prior to their issuance for independent technical reviews

Technical Development:

  • Remain proficient and up to date on the latest trends, technology and best practices in the ITS/Traffic engineering field

  • Support the technical development of other staff located within and remote of the primary AECOM offices

Business Development:

  • Provide technical support to business development leaders in the solicitation, proposition and negotiation of professional services with a variety of clients

  • Participate in development and execution of presentations at professional seminars, workshops or client engagements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Electronics and Communications, ITS engineering, or appropriate discipline

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience

  • Professional engineer licensure in the state of Michigan

  • Computer proficiency: Windows environment, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access); Microstation, AutoCAD, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and ability to maintain in adherence with an organized project file management structure

  • Ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure

  • Ability to learn new tasks and skills in an efficient manner

  • Ability to manage, prioritize and complete multiple tasks with competing deadlines

  • Ability to communicate clearly, organize correspondence, convey urgency and document decisions made to project management

  • Demonstrated expertise in traffic engineering and/or intelligent transportation system related topics

  • Demonstrated understanding of the latest trends in ITS/Traffic signals systems as they pertain to arterial roadway networks including Integrated Corridor Management, Connected Vehicles, Incident Management, High-Resolution Traffic Data and Active Traffic Demand Management Strategies

  • Demonstrated expertise in project life cycles from planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance

  • Experience in developing plans, specifications and reports

  • Experience in calculating quantity and cost estimates

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for conveying technical topics to both practitioners and laypersons

  • Technical and proficient ability in writing of reports, memoranda, and client communications

  • Periodic data collection and analysis

  • Due to the nature of this work, U.S. citizenship is required

  • Michigan Driver’s License in good standing
