Job Summary

AECOM's Los Angeles, CA office is currently seeking a Field Technician II – Leak Detection. The selected candidate(s) should be self-motivated, able to follow through with assignments with minimal direction, and possess a high degree of health and safety awareness. This is a part-time variable (temporary) position. It is anticipated that this position will be scheduled to work less than 30 hours per week. The current project requires coverage seven days a week, so selected candidates may be required to work weekends. Work is project dependent, so the work schedule and number of hours offered each week may vary as project needs change.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

The technician will perform leak detection survey work using the following Leak Detection methods:

  • EPA Method 21 monitoring – a leak is defined as any instrument reading of 500 parts per million by volume (ppmv) or greater

  • Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) – a leak is defined as any detectable emissions observed through the infra-red camera

  • AVO inspections – a leak is defined as any audible, visible, or olfactory indications of a leak (e.g., visual indications of liquids dripping)


  • Written daily reports will be required of the equipment and piping that is surveyed

  • Interaction with client may be necessary

  • While these tasks will make up the majority of the work assignments, additional activities may include various types of project administrative and support tasks

  • Report to multiple, assigned task managers and work under the purview of Project Managers

  • Capable of understanding technical work requirements with minimal training, explanation and oversight

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • 2+ years of related work experience

  • Must pass a State and Federal criminal history/security background check; many projects/clients are security sensitive

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen

  • Must participate in and successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment fitness for duty questionnaire

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record

  • Flexibility to work all shifts, including extended hours/12 hour shifts more than five days per week

  • Ability to travel on a daily basis and for extended periods as required

  • Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude

  • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions

  • Ability to effectively express his or herself orally and in writing to other project staff

  • Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office applications

  • Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable weather conditions

  • Position may include wearing associated personal protective equipment

  • Self-motivated, ability to follow through with assignments with minimal direction, and possess a high degree of health and safety awareness

Preferred Qualifications

  • Natural Gas Technician experience

  • OGI Certification or experience with using FLIR or Heath OGI camera

  • Trade certification, Associates Degree(s) and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology or Science

  • First Aid/CPR training

  • Proficiency in MS Project, MS Access
