Job Summary

The Building + Places of AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Lead Structural Engineer for immediate employment in the San Francisco, CA office to become part of our growing multi-disciplined team and lead our healthcare structural practice in the Bay Area.

The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to perform as the structural lead on projects and to demonstrate a combination of the following responsibilities in conjunction with fellow senior structural engineer:

  • Independently serves as the structural lead on various healthcare projects while having other senior structural engineers within AECOM available for consultation when needed

  • Serves as direct and sustained supervisor of other engineers or technicians

  • Works with project manager to effectively understand project scope, tasks, and budget. Works to stay within budget including managing others. Helps to identify and manage scope creep and tasks that are more complex than anticipated

  • Works with project manager and client to consider options and select a structural design concept during schematic phase of a project. Recognizes, identifies, and communicates potential issues, conflicts, and problems with proposed design concepts early in the design or evaluation process that need to be investigated to ensure project success

  • Suggests and considers options at various stages in the design or evaluation process

  • As necessary, works with others to modify established guidelines, devise new approaches, apply existing criteria in new ways and draw conclusions from comparative situations

  • Produces schematic concepts, plans, sketches, details and markups for designers and BIM specialists to progress project documents from conceptual design to final construction drawings in structural REVIT. Supervises and manages production of construction documents including writing or modifying specifications

  • Provides code compliant structural analysis and design needed to support technical reports and project drawings, including structural calculations and computer modeling

  • Participates as structural lead in project meetings as required either in-person or via phone or web meetings

  • Demonstrates the ability to work together with a multi-disciplined team including the willingness to investigate alternative structural solutions if needed to benefit other disciplines

  • Communicates verbally and in-writing with team members and the client in a timely manner to effectively convey information, requests, questions, findings, directions, and deadlines as needed to successfully deliver on the project at hand

  • Diligently follows up on communications to ensure that questions asked receive an answer and to ensure that decisions made are actually implemented and coordinated with the construction documents or technical reports. This requires the ability to independently organize communications

  • Performs site visits and field work as needed to collect information

  • Reviews the work of others and responds to review comments from others as part of the QA/QC process

  • Serves as Lead Verifier to perform high level review of structural work for other projects within AECOM

  • Handles engineering services during construction including review of shop drawings, responding to Requests For Information, and performing Structural Observations

  • Takes personal ownership of one’s own work including stamping and signing construction documents and technical reports

  • Performs work, which may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Exhibits competency in all conventional aspects of the subject matter of the functional area of the assignments. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria

  • Participates in pursuing and winning new work including development of fee estimates, scope of work, and proposal writing

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural Engineering

  • 10+ years experience

  • California, Oregon, or Washington SE License with ability to obtain others by reciprocity

  • Proven experience in California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) and healthcare design projects

  • Knowledge of and experience using REVIT

  • Knowledge of steel, concrete, masonry, and timber design

  • Knowledge of industry standard computer analysis and design software such as RISA 3D, SAP, ETABS, etc.

  • Proficient in current applicable codes (IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 41, ACI 318, ACI 530, AISC 360 and AISC 341)

  • Experience preparing technical reports, calculation packages, plans and specifications

  • Experience providing construction support and client communication

  • Effective communicator who has experience working with others

  • Experience as the structural lead for project work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferred

  • Knowledge of Non-linear Modeling

  • Certification as a Project Manager
