Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Entry-Level Planner for employment in the San Francisco, CA office. The selected candidate will join the Sustainable Development Group, part of AECOM’s global Planning + Economics Practice Line. The primary emphasis of the group is to promote socioeconomic and environmental sustainability in city planning, policy, and urban design project s. This is accomplished through employing rigorous strategic and economic planning techniques and developing innovative analytical approaches to providing solutions for delivering sustainability in varied domestic and international contexts.

This position will focus primarily on greenhouse gas mitigation projects and support climate adaptation and resiliency planning projects for local government and other public agencies, although could also include work for the private sector. Qualified candidates will have excellent analytical and writing skills with education and/or professional background in greenhouse gas accounting and policy, climate action planning, sustainability, climate change adaptation, and/or natural resource planning. The candidate must have a demonstrated expertise in sustainability, with a particular emphasis on climate change. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct data analysis and research in support of project delivery

  • Work under supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member

  • Support senior planners and/or project managers in producing documents, reports, graphics, and materials for community outreach

  1. Baseline and future greenhouse gas emissions modeling

  2. Greenhouse gas reduction policy development in the building energy, transportation, and waste sectors

  3. Cost-benefit analysis for climate mitigation or adaptation plans

  4. Climate action plans for cities of a range of sizes

  5. Climate vulnerability and risk assessments for municipalities, transportation agencies, utilities

  6. Climate adaptation plans for municipalities, transportation agencies, utilities

  7. Resiliency plans and strategies for cities

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Economics, Environmental Engineering/Design or other related field required. A Bachelor’s degree with strong, relevant work experience may be considered.

  • 1 - 3 years of experience at a planning consulting firm, or equivalent.

  • Understanding of greenhouse gas inventory and forecast methodologies and mitigation strategies

  • Experience in climate action planning essential, particularly policy and program design

  • Demonstrated experience conducting research and analysis, writing case studies and reports, and working as part of a team

  • Excellent quantitative skills (primarily MS Excel)

  • Excellent communication and writing skills are critical

  • Detail-oriented

  • Strong sense of commitment, a willingness to learn more and a desire to work in a dynamic, deadline driven team environment

  • Familiarity with climate change vulnerability and risk assessments that consider an array of climate impacts, including sea level rise, precipitation, and temperature and development of adaptation strategies to reduce impacts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related field

  • 3+ years of experience at a planning consulting firm, or equivalent, 2 years of experience may be substituted by having a Master's degree

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office suite is imperative. Experience with GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, or AutoCAD advantageous but not essential.

  • Basic programming skills (VBA, Python) preferred but not critical.

  • Course work related to sustainability planning (e.g., environmental economics and management)

  • Experience in the related fields (energy policy, land use planning, urban design, and transportation planning) advantageous

  • Resiliency and/or climate adaptation experience a plus but not a requirement
