Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking an Intermediate Environmental Planner who is looking for more experience and responsibility combined with exposure to a wide variety of power/energy or transportation-related projects including transit and highways. This position may be based out of our Guelph, Hamilton, Mississauga or Richmond Hill offices.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with and supporting senior Environmental Planners in carrying out Environmental Assessments and other approvals and permitting activities for power/energy, transit (Metrolinx), highway (MTO), or municipal transportation projects

  • Acting as deputy environmental lead for study tasks and small-scale studies dealing with power/energy or transportation

  • Coordinating, organizing, preparing for, attending, and documenting Environmental Team meetings

  • Coordinating the development and implementation of consultation programs, including municipal, regulatory agency and First Nations engagement

  • Coordinating work of environmental specialists (i.e., fisheries, terrestrial, noise, air, archaeology, etc.)

  • Liaising with local, Provincial, and Federal agencies regarding permits and approvals

  • Being familiar with Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection Act and other relevant legislation

  • Coordinating EA implementation and Compliance Monitoring Programs

  • Collaborating with technical and professional staff across the company in completing assignments

  • Researching, conceptualizing, planning, and writing drafts of reports related to planning, design and permitting

  • Liaising with clients by phone, email, and writing

  • Participating in study administration, through budgeting, invoicing, and staff management

  • Supporting business development efforts, including proposal writing and participation in industry associations

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree/Certificate in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or related field

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience

  • Experience with either NEB approvals processes, MTO Class EA and/or Individual EA processes and projects, and/or Metrolinx TPAP process and projects

  • Familiarity with the Ontario Environmental Assessment (EA) Act, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA), Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection Act and other relevant legislation

  • Knowledge of other relevant Ontario Legislation and Provincial Policy (i.e., the Planning Act, the Greenbelt Act, etc.)

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to work well with people

  • Class A driver’s license
