Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Research and Development Scientist 4 for our Pittsburgh, PA location.

Position Description:

A scientist is sought for research and development of new concepts for high temperature in-situ process monitoring for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications. New sensor technologies for embedded monitoring of both temperature and fuel gas stream composition within operational SOFCs will be explored and demonstrated under relevant operational conditions. New thin film sensor materials will be explored in conjunction with advanced methodologies for sensor interrogation and data analytics. The scientist will also be responsible for thin film deposition and characterization to support other functions and activities within the solid oxide fuel cell research group at NETL including fabrication of model electrode materials and systems for electrochemical testing under application relevant conditions. The individual may also engage in thin film deposition of perovskites and complex oxides for other application areas of interest to the NETL.

Examples of responsibilities may include:

1) Thin or thick film fabrication, deposition, and characterization using diffraction, electron microscopy, optical spectroscopy, electrical property measurements, and ellipsometry.

2) Sensor fabrication and testing including maintenance and upgrades for a custom developed sensor testing system using Labview programming methods.

3) Development of advanced data analytics for interpreting muti-parameter sensor data for complex high temperature gas streams.

4) Application of advanced x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and other characterization techniques for detailed thin film characterization.


Strong foundations in thin film deposition and characterization

Strong understanding of electronic and optical properties of ceramics and oxide materials.

Experience with electrochemical materials and devices such as solid oxide fuel cells.

Experience in solid state physics and materials science.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related science field and 10 years of experience or Masters degree and 3 years of job-related experience or equivalent. Excellent communications and analytical skills, working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs. Position may require travel. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in materials science and engineering, ceramic engineering, applied physics, physical chemistry, or related fields.
