Job Summary

The Environmental Compliance Department of AECOM is seeking a motivated and technically qualified Health and Safety Professional for immediate employment in a Los Angeles Metro area office. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in industrial hygiene, safety, and environmental health with knowledge of local, State, and Federal health and safety regulations. Depending on personal geography, the successful candidate may report to any one of the following offices: Orange; Long Beach; Los Angeles; San Diego; Ontario; Camarillo; Santa Maria; or Goleta.

The LA Metro+ Environmental Compliance Department has numerous ongoing health and safety projects providing health and safety management support to industrial and government clients. Our clients, employees and partners share a common certainty that safety is paramount. Health and safety is more than policies at AECOM; it is the foundation of how we work in the field, at our sites, and in our offices and laboratories. We provide not only OSHA compliance support but also incorporation of best practices into the safety culture of our clients. In addition, we provide customized environmental, health and safety training to clients. The group provides industrial hygiene surveys assessing exposure to metals, asbestos, organic vapors, noise, and radiation. We provide safety management system and compliance audits for our clients. Currently the Compliance Department has 80 staff members and is looking to expand further with the immediate hire of a Health and Safety Professional.

Responsibilities would include senior management of staff and business development on all facets of industrial hygiene-related compliance projects, with the goals of:

  • Delivering high quality products/outcomes

  • Meeting financial and timeline performance requirements

  • Achieving client satisfaction

  • Maintaining staff utilization

  • Growing IH resources practice depth

The selected candidate will be involved in a variety of projects with the following duties:

  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and engineers in a variety of small- and large-scale projects that focus on facility audits, preparation of technical reports, training programs, agency responses, and recommendations

  • Support and/or lead the preparation of proposals and cost estimates for local IH support of industrial and government clients

  • Delegate work, mentor, and supervise less experienced staff while managing projects of varying size and complexity

  • Identify and develop new clients and work, manage existing clients and contracts, and lead/assist marketing endeavors

  • Provide creative project approaches through written, verbal, and graphic communication

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or other relevant discipline

  • 10+ years relevant work experience and a minimum 7 years field experience working within consulting, manufacturing or governmental agency

  • Must have experience performing, managing and developing environmental, health and safety compliance programs, monitoring and auditing programs in industrial/manufacturing settings

  • Must have a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification

  • Must have high level experience working with federal, state and local environmental and safety rules and regulations

  • Past history of successful business development in Los Angeles Metro area with industrial, public, and/or federal clients; existing local client relationships

  • Demonstrated leadership and successful management of multiple professional staff

  • Excellent organizational, technical writing, and verbal communication (presentations and public speaking) skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Ownership and accountability for quality deliverables

  • Candidate must be highly motivated with good client communication skills both in written and verbal forms

  • Candidate must have the ability to climb ladders, carry up to 25 pounds, wear a respirator, and wear appropriate PPE required for work in the field

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test

  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications

Further, experience in the following would be considered an asset:

  • Implementation of policies and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with health and safety requirements

  • Providing technical leadership and functional guidance to ensure regulatory standards are being enforced

  • Serves as integral member of AECOM business development network and will assist with and lead new pursuits with both existing and new clients

  • Serves in a liaison capacity with agencies engaged in promoting health and safety activities

  • Ensuring that quality control procedures are executed to monitor all aspects of regulations

  • Drafting reports to federal, state and local agencies

  • Coordinating audits of health and safety programs for internal AECOM teams and for clients

  • Assisting in the development and conducts basic health, safety and environment (HSE) training to employees

  • Communicating programs to enhance employee awareness of prevention and compliance

  • Administration of a HSE program on specialized projects or multiple projects

  • Supervising personnel engaged in monitoring and preventing hazards and diseases that could be present throughout the work sites

  • Planning, implementing, and completing health and safety investigations and sampling programs including managing field teams

  • Managing health and safety projects, prepare project work plan, budget, and project report preparation

  • Mentoring, supervising, and motivating junior employees

  • Completion of AECOM Project Manager Certification within 6 months of hire
