Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Construction Field Engineer to be based in our Olmsted, Illinois location.

The Olmsted Dam will replace two deteriorating locks on the nation’s busiest stretch of commercial; navigation in the inland waterways. The dam will comprise five, 110 tainter gates and a navigable pass sections with boat-operated wicket gates. Affixed weir will tie the dam into the Kentucky bank. The dam is constructed by an “in-the-wet” method. Cast shells are built on land adjacent to the dam location and weigh on the order of 5,000 tons. They are lifted with a gantry crane and a continuity rebar grids are attached on the launch way. They are launched, lifted with a catamaran heavy lift barge, floated into position and set underwater on a prepared bed of select fill ad 24” diameter pipe pile foundation. Once the shells are in place, concrete is tremied into the cast shell to form a continuous bond between the foundation piles, rebar, and adjacent shell. The project uses state of the art engineering, survey, construction and productivity methods.This individual will work in an active field environment and be tasked with various field surveying functions relating to construction of large reinforced concrete dam segments.Tasks may include positioning the cat barge, Lift frames alignment, weight control scanning and entry into civil 3D; layout of metals, positioning of shell onto tremie template as well as river and land surveying. The position may require periodic deployment on floating plant equipment therefore the individual must be comfortable working on the water.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Communicate contract design requirements to superintendents, foremen and craft

  • Manage and coordinate implementation of advanced construction methods such as grout mat installation, river bottom grading, subaqueous controlled flow excavation, etc.

  • Develop and review work plans, critical lift plans, job safety analysis, etc.

  • Assist with scheduling, procurement, material take offs and cost estimates

  • Develop, schedule and troubleshoot innovative construction means and methods

  • Coordinate and oversee vessel positioning utilizing RTK GPS and system networking

  • Review and inspect finalized work to ensure contractual compliance

Grade 11 Level Specific Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, performs routine duties. Displays knowledge and abilities to evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to meet basic engineering and construction specifications. Displays applications of sound professional judgment on details of work. Independently performs walk-downs and inspections of installed commodities to assure conformance with specifications and design. Performs quantity surveys for tracking and reporting. May provide technical direction to drafters, technicians, and surveyors.

Grade 12 Level Specific Responsibilities:

This is an intermediate level position. Under general supervision, performs routine duties. Displays knowledge and abilities to evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to meet basic engineering and construction specifications. Displays applications of sound professional judgment on details of work. May supervise technicians, drafters and surveyors.

Minimum Requirements

Grade 11:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or demonstrated combination of education/training and experience.

Experience:

  • 2 years experience in the construction industry with field experience required.

Grade 12:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or demonstrated combination of education/training and experience.

Experience:

  • 3 years experience in the construction industry with field experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering preferred

  • Prior experience with Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and/or Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

  • Previous marine environment experience or the desire to gain marine environment experience

  • Heavy civil or concrete experience

  • Experience in scheduling, procurement, material take offs and/or cost estimates

Additional Information:

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.

  • Due to the nature of work, candidate must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States.

  • Ability to climb stair towers equivalent to a five story building several times daily

  • Candidate must be willing and able to work day or night shift, overtime, weekends, and holidays.

  • Candidate must have the willingness and ability to work on land or over water.

  • Must be able to work from a man lift up to 120 feet in height

  • Relocation benefits are not available for this position.
