About the Business Line


We create comprehensive delivery solutions for water, wastewater and wet weather systems, desalination, water resources, water reuse, tunneling, and community infrastructure through traditional and alternative delivery services such as program management and design-build.

Job Summary

AECOM’s Water Business Line is currently seeking a highly creative and talented Senior Tunnel Engineer/Project Manager for immediate employment for the Oakland, CA office. AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects, the responsibilities and expectations of this position will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide Project Management and technical leadership for tunneling projects

  • Coordinate work with clients and other technical groups (e.g., structural engineers, environmental scientists, etc.)

  • Contribute to the overall growth of the Tunneling Practice

  • Help develop and maintain client relationships; participate in business development and proposal preparation

  • Actively manage and participate in client work through billable assignments on tunnel projects

  • Maintain and enhance personal technical skills in the tunneling practice, and continue to build personal reputation within the industry as well as AECOM brand

  • Prepare and present technical papers at industry forums to enhance AECOM’s reputation as a leader in the worldwide tunneling industry

  • Participate in AECOM tunneling practice group and on special teams to support regional and national project needs

  • Supervise and mentor younger members of AECOM tunneling staff in their growth and development

  • Assist in attracting and recruiting new staff to help rebuild and grow the practice locally


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 13+ years of responsible management and technical experience on major tunneling projects, including planning, design, and construction phase experience for water and/or transportation tunnels

  • Excellent qualifications and widely recognized professional reputation in tunnel engineering, geotechnical engineering, and/or geologic engineering for large underground infrastructure

  • Experience using SAP2000, MS Project, AutoCAD, FLAC, GeoStudio, and/or other relevant analysis and design software

  • Experience in conducting or directing field investigation and construction activities

  • Experience in a range of tunneling methods, including TBM (pressurized closed face, and open), roadheader, drill and blast, sequential excavation, etc.

  • Strong skills in communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and risk management

  • Ability to work without supervision; organized; energetic and enthusiastic; and ability to build key relationships both within the firm and with external clients

  • Maintain and/or secure Professional Engineering registration in states where AECOM pursues and conducts tunnel engineering work

  • Willingness and ability to travel and work with key staff and clients within the region and nationally
