We create comprehensive delivery solutions for water, wastewater and wet weather systems, desalination, water resources, water reuse, tunneling, and community infrastructure through traditional and alternative delivery services such as program management and design-build.

Job Summary

AECOM’s Water Business Line is currently seeking a highly creative and talented Western Region Tunnel Technical Practice Leader. This position is based in AECOM’s Oakland, CA office. In addition to coordination with key tunneling staff across the firm, this role will support the Regional Tunnel Practice Manager and will report directly to the Americas Director of Tunneling.

The responsibilities and expectations of the West Region Tunnel Practice Leader will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support development of strategies to grow AECOM’s Tunneling and Trenchless Construction Practice

  • Contribute to overall sales and revenue goals for the Americas Tunnels Practice and the Northern California Water Business Unit

  • Support the West Region Tunnel Market Sector Leader with proactive leadership on key tunneling pursuits

  • Provide consistent technical leadership to deliver high-quality services on tunnel projects within the West Region

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase AECOM presence and visibility in the tunneling industry

  • Assist in attracting top tunneling talent to AECOM and growing the practice

  • Work with the West Region Market Sector Leader as well as national and global practice leaders to identify and secure technical resources to serve major proposal opportunities and project responsibilities, and to deliver high quality work meet or exceeding standards and expectations

  • In coordination with West Region Market Sector Leader, support efforts on major water, transportation and energy tunneling pursuits, including participation in key marketing and business development efforts, development of pursuit strategies, review and input to teaming and staffing arrangements, production of high quality proposals, and participation in key interviews

  • Obtain AECOM Project Management Certification

  • Actively manage and participate in client work through billable assignments on tunnel projects

  • Serve as the coordinator and/or Lead Verifier for technical review of tunnel projects in the West

  • Ensure high quality reviews are performed for work undertaken in this region

  • Identify additional AECOM personnel as needed to serve as lead technical reviewers for West region projects

  • Maintain and enhance personal technical skills in the tunneling practice, and continue to build personal reputation within the industry as well as the AECOM brand

  • Prepare and present technical papers and take lead coordination roles at industry forums to enhance AECOM’s reputation as a leader in the worldwide tunneling industry

  • Build relationships with key clients and AECOM tunneling practices in the West Region and throughout the Americas to help develop teams that can be mobilized to support project needs

  • Mentor younger members of AECOM tunneling staff; assist in attracting and recruiting new staff to help grow the practice both locally and regionally

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 20+ years of responsible management and technical experience on major tunneling projects, including planning, design, and construction phase experience for water and transportation tunnels

  • Excellent qualifications and widely recognized professional reputation in tunnel engineering, geotechnical engineering, and/or geologic engineering for large underground infrastructure

  • Strong skills in communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and risk management

  • Ability to work minimal supervision; organized; energetic and enthusiastic; and ability to build key relationships both within the firm and with external clients

  • Maintain and/or secure Professional Engineering registration in California and other states where AECOM pursues and conducts tunnel engineering work

  • Willingness and ability to travel and work with key staff and clients within the region and nationally

  • Availability to travel as needed to support other Western US offices

  • Additional travel to other US or international locations may also be necessary to participate in key pursuits, as coordinated with the national and/or international tunnel practice leaders

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field of study
