Job Summary

We have a need for an intermediate to senior level Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join our team based in Oakland, California. The majority of the time will be spent working in an office environment; however, field work will be required periodically.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist Lead Instrumentation and Controls Engineer, Project Managers, and our customers to ensure that I&C engineering scope of work is clearly defined for each project

  • Perform I&C design and engineering functions for natural gas compressor stations and other industrial facilities in accordance with relevant codes and standards

  • Instrumentation detailed design activities including, but not limited to, data sheets, instrument lists and indexes, bills of materials, instrument installation details, instrument location diagrams, and calculations

  • Controls detailed design activities including, but not limited to, control strategies, cause and effect diagrams, block diagrams, termination and connection diagrams, and panel layouts

  • Specify equipment to be installed in classified (hazardous) areas

  • Develop technical evaluations for I&C procurements

  • Provide engineering support during construction, start-up, and commissioning

  • Perform field investigation work in an industrial environment

  • Provide support for manufacturer Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and able to develop / review FAT procedures

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from an accredited university

  • 10+ years' I&C experience

  • California PE (EE or CS) License, or EIT with ability to gain PE within two years

  • Ability to read, understand and develop complex Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)

  • Good knowledge of the NEC and other relevant codes and standards such as IEEE, NFPA, and ISA

  • Familiar with industrial SCADA, PLC, and DCS hardware and software applications, including relay logic

  • Experience in developing ISA data sheets and specifying primary elements (flow, level, pressure, temperature) and control and shutoff valves

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Proactive

  • Ability to travel as required

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

  • Skilled with MS Office suite

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and / or Microstation

  • Ability to meet project schedules

  • Must be able to develop designs using third party (such as vendor) information as a basis, and to be able to work with vendors and others to resolve technical issues

  • Willingness to work on engineering projects that may not be directly related to I&C Design

  • Basic knowledge of Ethernet and serial networks

  • Knowledgeable of low voltage electrical engineering as it applies to I&C, for power distribution and grounding

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preferably in the oil and gas industry

  • Experience developing procurement specifications

  • Experience in telemetry / SCADA systems

  • Experience with SEL relays, and / or substation protection and control

  • Experience with SIL, LOPA, and HAZOP / PHA processes

  • Fire detection and annunciation design experience
