Job Summary

Our Newcastle based Strategic Highways team currently has vacancies for Highway Engineers. The successful candidates will take responsibility in all aspects of highway design to work on local, national and international schemes from our Newcastle Office.

The successful candidates will join AECOM’s established highways business which continues to expand following several major project wins. The successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience, show both technical and leadership qualities and have experience of major/ minor highways design. For those appointed we expect those people to work closely with our clients and take responsibility for delivering quality products to strict financial and programme targets.

The highways business in the North East represents over 40 years of accumulated skills, experience and established culture in the delivery of all types of highway schemes; from major motorway improvements with Highways England such as the A1 Dishforth to Barton Improvement scheme to major highway schemes such as Morpeth Northern Bypass, New Tyne Crossing and several junction improvements on the strategic highway network. Our modern offices on Newcastle Quayside have good transport links and the teams have an established reputation for quality and delivery. We are looking to enhance and enlarge these teams with people who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination.

Currently engaged on a number of interesting and challenging projects both locally and nationally there are a number of opportunities for the candidates to be involved in the range of work secured and anticipated. Recent and current projects in the UK include HS 2, future improvements to the A184 in Gateshead and HE Network Maintenance schemes. Our services offered to our clients include the full range and scope of highways work from inception to completion across all the key discipline areas. We work on schemes from feasibility stage through the development phase and planning and DCO process, preliminary design, detailed design and site supervision.


Work under the direction of Principal/ Senior Engineers to ensure that the Job/ Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards.

Assist in the provision of technical inputs, across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering

Reporting to Principal and Senior Engineers, you will undertake a variety of tasks providing as an individual or through team effort, a range of design and written deliverables.

Show technical competence and through experience, gather and take on board the the skills of others in computer based applications and tasks including use of software such as MX, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MSProject.

Undertake Project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects, as appropriate to the grade.

Take an assistant role on projects within particular skill area – e.g. drainage, pavements, geometric layouts etc.

Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required.

Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required.

Liaison with sub-consultants and external parties, as required.

Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office disciplines and projects .

Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role we would like to hear from candidates who are able to offer experience and proficiency in two or more of the key areas;

Project management or asset management, alignment design, drainage design, pavement design and refurbishment, signs and road markings, safety barrier or asset inspection.

Management of design and delivery of highway maintenance schemes.

Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment, operating across a matrix of projects.

Experience of preparing for and attending meetings with clients and/or statutory consultees.

Experience of working with HE processes (i.e. Project Control Framework and Collaborative Delivery Framework) desirable.

Experience of working in the Design and Build sector particularly preparing tenders for contractors.

A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills.

Full awareness of Current Health and Safety Legislation and how it is applied to the design process.

Willing to consider local and national secondments and short term overseas assignments

Preferred Qualifications

Graduates working towards Chartered Engineer status.
