Job Summary

The Transportation Division of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Rail/Transit Engineer for immediate employment in our New York, NY office. The position is exciting, challenging, fast paced and will empower any self-motivated candidate to grow rapidly both from a technical standpoint and from a career/mentoring/business perspective. This is a part-time position.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with a team of managers, task leaders and other engineers/planners to work towards the development and delivery of products needed by our clients for them to construct projects (engineering/design) and needed by our clients to help them make key decisions as they move forward with concepts (planning). These products include cost estimates, reports, design plans, construction specifications and other deliverables.

  • Responsible for development of track layouts (geometry), construction plans (sections, profiles, etc.), constructions specifications, and numerous other tangible tasks

  • Working on Rail-Transit projects at a conceptual (5 to 15%) completion level

  • Development of planning reports, high-level capital cost estimates, and coordinating the concept/geometry/typical sections with the project’s environmental team, high-level capital cost impacts and the overall goals of the client at hand

  • In addition to design geometry, developing completed PS&E Package (Plans, Construction Specifications and Estimate) wherein the Track Engineer/Planner’s tasks are to coordinate the interdisciplinary requirements of structures, site/civil with the track plans and coordinate across the PS&E the consistent design/pay item elements involved in the work

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering

  • 5+ years of experience the Railroad and/or Rail-Transit industry

  • Knowledge and proficiency in AREMA Guidelines, track geometry, various Rail-Transit client requirements/standards, and the Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build process

  • Experience developing client focused design criteria that will drive calculations towards the production of real-world track geometry and components that will then undergo applicable QA/QC review and validation

  • Perform a QC review of the geometry developed by others

  • Understanding of overall project controls and design/submittal documentation

  • Proficient in practice and protocols for numerous computer software systems including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, various CAD programs (MicroStation and/or AutoCAD) and one or more of the following embedded design software (InRails, GeoPak, InRoads, Civil3D, LandDesktop, etc.)

  • Prepare plans, profiles, and typical sections, running cross sections based off digital terrain models/surveys, and developing limited track details depending upon project requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, constructive interpersonal skills

  • Candidate must have the ability to manage their own schedule and must be self-motivated to plan, coordinate and prioritize numerous simultaneous tasks

  • Experience with presenting data/findings and explaining such information to a non-track or non-technical audience

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in the Railroad and/or Rail-Transit industry

  • Experience in the layout/development of a yard’s functional geometry

  • New York PE License – or ability to acquire within 2 years

  • AICP

  • Cursory understanding of turnout componentry/special track work and its functionality, and its design and typical procurement process as the candidate’s tasks may involve these elements
