AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Senior Traffic Operations Engineer to be employed at a client facility located in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. The position is part of an AECOM led team that operates, maintains and manages the client’s arterial intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The client’s ITS deployments include technologies such as centralized traffic signal management systems (CENTRACS and TACTICS), surveillance cameras, WiFi/Bluetooth detection devices, probe data sources, vehicle/pedestrian detection, and wired/wireless communications. The system is continuously evolving to remain at the forefront of the industry in the practical application of the latest ITS technology and this position will have the opportunity to support the investigation, piloting, deployment, and operation of systems such as connected vehicle road side units/applications, high-resolution signal performance metrics, travel time analytics, vehicle pre-emption/priority systems and much more.
The position will report to and collaborate with the on-site AECOM Operations Manager, key client staff and AECOM staff from similar operations/offices.
The general responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Report to and collaborate with the on-site AECOM Operations Manager and key client staff to meet all project objectives
Effectively manage, organize, prioritize, delegate and/or execute the daily project tasks for the Traffic Operations Engineering team such as:
Collect traffic data from the field, including operational observations, intersection lane measurements, grades, and signal phasing
Develop, modify and use traffic signal system models (based upon Synchro)
Assess, monitor, manage, and report on the performance of the traffic signal system
Review, investigate, resolve and address operational concerns of the roadway network as reported by the public
Perform before/after evaluations of system adjustments, incidents, or other events to assess user delay costs or value to the public
Conduct a variety of traffic and ITS engineering related studies and prepare reports or presentations as assigned
Provide technical mentorship and professional development for the Traffic Operations Engineering team
Develop, provide and present a variety of technical materials in settings ranging from one-on-one discussions to large audiences
Interact professionally and proactively with clients to ensure they are highly satisfied with deliverables as provided
Actively engage with local/national AECOM resources, professional publications, research topics, or other materials to ensure that latest industry best practices are understood and evaluated for application to the client’s operation
May require travel within Michigan to serve the project, potential exists for one to two day trips at infrequent intervals
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, traffic engineering, electronics and communications, ITS engineering, or appropriate discipline
5+ years of practical experience in a professional engineering related work environment
Valid driver’s License in good standing
Must have the ability to work all shifts including: nights, major holidays, weekends, planned/unplanned events
Full-range of physical mobility, visual acuity, and general good health to permit working in both a field and office environment
Computer proficiency: Windows environment, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access); Microstation, AutoCAD, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and ability to maintain in adherence with an organized project file management structure
Proven record of leading staff, communicating clearly, conveying urgency, and proactively managing schedules
Proven ability to both work calmly and accurately under pressure while also directing and prioritizing the work of others
Proven ability to maintain a high level of self-motivation and resourcefulness
Proven ability to develop technical reports, documents, client communication and technical memoranda
Proven ability to professional communicate with public regarding operational concerns on roadways in a layperson manner
Demonstrated capacity to efficiently and effectively speak, read and write on technical topics in the English language
Ability to meet rigorous attendance standards
Proven ability to adhere to a variety of project specific operational policies and protocols
Professional Engineering licensure in the state of Michigan or ability to obtain with 9-months of hire
Experience with programming and implementing traffic signal timing plans in active traffic signal controllers
Experience with D4 traffic signal controller software
Experience with CENTRACS or TACTICS central signal control system software
Experience with data manipulation, management and processing
Experience with ITS communication networks and devices
IMSA certifications for traffic signal timing or cabinet related work
