Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Research Scientist 3 for either our Morgantown, WV or Pittsburgh, PA location.

Position Description:

  1. This position requires a Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Materials Sciences, or related subject and at least 3 years of experience in LIBS and laser ablation (including graduate and post-graduate work) with a preference of specializing inoptics, lasers, optical spectroscopy, optical sensing,optical system design, spectroscopy techniques with an emphasis on development and application of optical sensors in support of a DOE based national laboratory environment

  2. The candidate will provide R&D support to design, built, and installing a prototype laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument for down-hole measurements for carbon storage and monitoring.

  3. The candidate will have experience in research and development of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy in harsh conditions, particularly applied to pressurized water with high salinity, relevant to carbon storage measurements and monitoring.

  4. The ideal candidate will have experience with optical system design, Opto/mechanical system modeling, and optical system assembly and operation.

  5. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated ability to author publications, technical paper writing, and presentations related to their research work.

  6. Broad knowledge and hands on skills pertaining to various lasers, and spectroscopy techniques.

  7. The candidate will provide R&D support to NETL-URS Carbon Storage staff. The support will be to provide broad based technical support for geochemistry.

  8. An update will be due by the end of each month briefly describing the accomplishments from that month and the next month’s forecast. Also, the applicant will include the relevant status of patents, publications or presentations. Reported information concerning publications and presentations shall include full title, author listing and journal or society name.

  9. An update will be due by the end of the quarter briefly describing that quarter’s accomplishments.

  10. The candidate will participate in group meetings. Group meetings are designed to allow the applicant to discuss current research and promote discussion with fellow Carbon Capture researchers. Group meetings occur every week. The manager will request the applicant to provide a PowerPoint presentation for group meetings. The frequency of these presentations is generally once every 6 months but can occur at a higher rate.

  11. This position will require extensive interface with customers and potential collaborative partners, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The complexity of information to be managed will require excellent organization skills and attention to detail.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related science field and 7 years of job-related experience. Excellent communications and analytical skills, working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs. Position may require travel. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a security clearance
