Job Summary

AECOM’s Transit and Rail Signals group is seeking a Transit & Rail Signals Project Manager Design Engineer to work with an existing team of Signal Designers, Signal Specialists and Communication Specialists. The position is open for immediate employment based out of AECOM’s Mississauga, Ontario office. This is a position of an experienced signals design engineer who is seeking a leadership position in their field.

This individual would deliver both large and small-scale signals projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Canada, and at times in the US as well. As a Transit & Rail Signals Project Manager and Design Engineer, the successful applicant will have multiple roles:

Team Management / Leadership:

  • Primary role is to manage Signal Projects and assist in the bidding process of any future Transit and Rail Projects.

  • Work with a global team of Signals and Communications Specialists, Designers and Transit System Engineers.

  • Monitor costs relative to established budgets for the Signals and Communication projects.

  • Attend and lead client meetings.

  • Grow the team including participating in recruiting and interviewing candidates.

  • Act as the designated signals/systems engineer on complex rail projects.

  • Comply with corporate safety, values and initiatives.

Project Manager and Design Engineer:

  • Projects will be for:

  • North American heavy-rail freight and passenger systems to AREMA C&S standards

  • LRT and Subway transit systems

  • Assist with design, review, and checking (up to 3rd level) for:

  • New and modified vital circuitry and application logic programs for automatic block systems, centralized traffic control, interlocking’s, and highway grade crossing warning systems.

  • Assist with review of signal work done by others for adherence to applicable standards, rules and regulations, as well as all applicable client standards and signal design policies and procedures.

  • Coordinate signals design with systems (e.g. OCS/Traction power), power supply and civil/track designs that are done by others.

  • Prepare technical specifications for traditional design-bid-build and P3/Alternative Design and Procurement/Design build projects.

  • Assist with hands-on signal design if necessary

  • Assist with 3rd-level checks of signal designs completed by others if necessary.

  • P.Eng sealing of Signal Drawings and documentations only as appropriate and in strict compliance with the Professional Engineers Ontario Practice Guidelines and the Railway Safety Act.

Business Development:

  • Support proposal preparation and business development for AECOM’s signals/system business.

  • Estimate engineering effort (fees) and schedules for signals design assignments.

  • AECOM to provide Project Manager Training and certification.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • P.Eng or PE somewhere in Canada or the US.

  • 8+ years of extensive rail signaling design experience.

  • Experience delivering projects for commuter rail or freight rail.

  • Significant experience with AREMA-based heavy-rail signal design.

  • In depth knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations pertaining to railroad and transit signal systems and highway-rail grade crossing warning systems. Must specifically include knowledge of AREMA C&S Recommended Practices, GCS, GCR, CROR, and industry standards.

  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of essential signaling systems: ATC, CTC, ABS, PTC, ATS, CBTC, etc.

  • Experience in grade crossing and vital microprocessor-based interlocking equipment programming.

  • Proficient in highway grade crossing warning design, microprocessor-based constant warning time devices.

  • Proficient at reading and interpreting Braking Analysis to provide correct aspects accordingly.

  • Proficient in wayside signaling including ABS, CTC and Interlocking, both relay logic and Boolean or ladder logic.

  • Experience with / working knowledge of both AutoCAD and MicroStation.

  • Experience writing technical specifications.

  • Experience undertaking design reviews.

  • Competent written and verbal English skills.
