Job Summary

AECOM is home to a dynamic Water and Natural Environment team, with representatives inputting to stream restoration and management projects across the globe. We are currently looking to further strengthen our stream restoration capabilities in Ontario, specifically in the field of Natural Channel Design.

The successful Senior Fluvial Geomorphologist will be a motivated individual, with a background in fluvial geomorphology or river engineering, and practical experience of channel design. He or she will work with AECOM’s fluvial geomorphologists, hydraulic engineers, and ecologists to deliver various stream restoration projects, including restoration of natural processes and habitat conditions, erosion control and fish passage improvements. Depending on the applicant’s background and interest, opportunities exist within AECOM to grow further experience in other hydraulic or geoscience fields.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Lead ‘Natural Channel Design’ and stream restoration projects

  • Design and conduct detailed field investigations

  • Coordinate the work of junior staff

  • Oversee the analysis and interpretation of geomorphic and hydraulic data

  • Work collaboratively across offices and disciplines

  • Maintain an understanding of current approaches, methods and protocols in channel design

  • Enhance existing, and build new, client relationships through project work and communication

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant earth sciences or engineering discipline (e.g. geomorphology, river engineering, physical geography)

  • 10+ years of experience in stream restoration and design

  • Demonstrated ability to apply and lead Natural Channel Design approaches, from concept development through to detailed design

  • Knowledge of fluvial form, processes and functions – including their dependence on local physiography and their influence on ecological habitats

  • Experience in applying analytical tools/equations (empirical, theoretical) to characterize the fluvial system and steer management decisions

  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with clients, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership of the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) or Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEng.)

  • Experience in construction implementation and monitoring of stream design projects

  • Proficiency in aerial photography interpretation and familiarity with GIS and/or AutoCAD

  • Previous experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team, interacting with aquatic ecologists, water resources engineers and fluvial geomorphologists

  • Familiarity with permits and approvals pertaining to streams and valleys in Ontario

  • Business development experience in generating work with new and existing clients
