Position Title Health & Safety Officer

Job Summary

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the implementation of EHS management system specific to the project.

  • Reviewing of Risk Assessments, Method Statements and other documents when necessary.

  • Ensures compliance of Contractors to their H&S Management Plan.

  • Ensure inspections and surveillance are carried out.

  • Responsible for health and safety training requirements and accurate record keeping.

  • Responsible for input into Client Reports, Site Reporting and filing thereof.

  • Maintains accurate site statistics on manpower, H&S and environmental requirements.

  • Supports site supervision in their daily duties.

  • Setting up and participating in EHS and other site meetings when required.

  • Directs a Project to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards.

  • Monitors policies, procedures, Projects, standards, and design criteria affecting construction safety.

  • Determines causes of unsafe conditions through procedure review, equipment and facilities inspection, and worker observation with corrective action recommendations provided.

  • Monitor Principal Contractor and Contractor compliance with EHS regulations and Client EHS Specifications.

  • On-going review and maintenance of all EHS related Procedures, Forms and Supporting Documents.

  • General administration duties as is required.

Minimum Requirements


  • At least 5 years as a South African or Mozambican Health and Safety Officer

  • Experience in conducting induction training.

  • Working knowledge of reviewing Contractors’ H&S plans and EHS Documentation, as well as monitoring compliance.

  • Able to stop work that is carried out in an unsafe manner.

  • Knowledge of analysis and reporting on H&S performance.

  • Experience with root cause analysis and investigation.

  • Has a solid, proven track record.

  • Maintains close contacts to local Department of Labour Inspectorate (Mozambique).

  • Able to check conformance of construction plant to statutory requirements and regulations.

  • Ability to develop material for awareness campaigns and communicate the relevant information to the site.

  • Conducts H&S walkabouts and directs corrective actions.

  • Implements general Environmental Requirements.

  • Good working knowledge of local Mozambican H&S Legislation.

  • Working knowledge of local Mozambican Environmental requirements.

Personal attributes:

  • Good communication skills.

  • Team leadership and time integration capability.

  • Written and spoken English and Portuguese.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant HSE Qualification or Training.
