We provide services with a concentration in economic analysis. Our economic services encompass planning and programming, measuring and testing, and strategy and implementation for a broad range of clients.

Job Summary

We are looking for a Senior Consultant to join our team to play a key role in developing our growing UK and international economic development business from our Manchester office.

Responsible as part of the Economics team at AECOM for the winning and delivery of significant projects in the UK and overseas covering:

  • Economic growth, sectoral and other spatial strategies from local to national level in the UK and overseas.

  • Socio-economic impact assessments of infrastructure and development schemes to support business cases and funding applications.

  • Case making for and feasibility of a wider range of economic development projects and programmes.

  • Design and manage primary and secondary research projects and data analysis to develop a compelling evidence base.

  • Evaluations of projects, programmes and policies to show impact and value for money.

It would be helpful to have knowledge and experience of working across economic development including business growth, skills, innovation, inward investment, and land use planning

  1. Responsible and accountable to a Project Director for the technical delivery of projects, or undertaking a significant technical role as part of an integrated project team on large assignments.

  2. Responsible and accountable for Project Manager KPIs, including customer focus, project set up, communication & team management, risk management and quality, change control, commercial management, and safety health & environment.

  3. Ownership of financial responsibilities with projects and assignments and expected to meet financial, marketing, and management goals.

  4. Proactive and client focused, understanding the needs of the project and offering high quality, professional advice.

  5. Work as a key member of teams on business development efforts. Perform a Bid Manager role in business development and work winning.

  7. Provide guidance to junior staff within teams and manage junior and graduate staff as appropriate.

Minimum Requirements

Our professionals specialize in economic development, strategic planning, design and master planning. The Economics team have a very varied portfolio of work and undertake a wide range of analysis across the project life cycle from concept development through to evaluation of project impacts. Examples include:

  • The development of business cases and option appraisals for a projects and programmes with current work for Welsh Government, a number of Local Enterprise Partnerships and local authorities;

  • Economic Impact assessments of major infrastructure projects and mixed-use developments (including High Speed 2 and Thames Tunnel);

  • Economic strategy and policy development with work covering a range of sectors from Energy through to Advanced Manufacturing and different interventions including Enterprise Zones and Government support programmes

  • Undertaking research and evaluations for central government departments (including the BIS and Defra)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. A degree in geography, economics, business or a related discipline and an MSc/MBA/equivalent qualification in a similar field, or overall equivalent experience.

  2. A track record in economic development with some specialised areas. It would be desirable to have experience of some of the following: land use planning and property development, transport and infrastructure projects, design and delivery of business support and skills initiatives, business case and funding submissions, innovation and inward investment.

  3. A portfolio of work which demonstrates excellent technical capabilities (literacy and numeracy).

  4. Analytic and numerical skills supported by a high level of spreadsheet and other software skills

  5. A track record of contributing to innovative economic development solutions and working across complex local, regional and national stakeholder relationships.

  6. A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills and ability to work in a consultancy environment, effectively managing client relationships and working to tight deadlines.

  7. A team player who can work as part of wide project teams across disciplines and geographies – making high quality technical contributions. Helps to support the building of the team and the internal relationships.​
