Job Summary

Our Remediation team is looking for an enthusiastic Project Manager. As an integral member of the EHS & Remediation Services team, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of contaminated land assessments. You will provide support in the delivery of services to private and public sector clients including multinational industrials, the nuclear industry, financial services, local authorities and other government agencies in addition to other internal teams across the business in the delivery of multi-discipline design, build and construction schemes.

Nationally our Remediation Services team is one of the largest in the UK and provides one-stop access to a variety of services. The Manchester office has an established track record of successfully delivering land contamination assessments and remediation works throughout the country. We are now looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical background in land contamination assessment that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

The team provides services ranging from desk studies, site investigation, risk assessment, remediation (strategy development, design, implementation, supervision and validation), monitoring and close-out on a wide range of contracts. We also support other AECOM business lines where their projects have a Remediation Services interface. Our Local Remediation Services team is involved in a number of high profile projects with a variety of clients across a broad range of sectors.

Our clients are from the private and public sector and our leading clients include global oil & gas companies, the nuclear industry, Fortune 500 multinational corporations, regulatory bodies and agencies (e.g. Environment Agency, HCA and local authorities).

Job Responsibilities:

To work within the team providing project management support including work on contaminated land assessment, investigation and remediation projects. The appointed person will be expected to take on project management tasks including making the necessary arrangements beforehand for any fieldwork, production of reporting deliverables, setting budgets and management of project fees and expenditure. The candidate will likely spend the majority of their time office based but may be expected to travel and work away from home from time to time.

Further responsibilities include:

  • Work within a team, undertaking desk studies, site investigations, laboratory procurement for environmental analysis, data analysis, factual and interpretive report writing.

  • Ensure client satisfaction through implementation of projects.

  • Learn and comply with AECOM’s project management procedures and become an AECOM certified project manager.

  • Prepare proposals for ground investigations and remediation projects for senior project manager/ project director review.

  • Prepare technical specifications and contract documentation.

  • Coordinate field service subcontractors and fully supervise ground investigation works.

  • Collect soil and groundwater samples/data during assessment and remedial action activities at various sites in the UK.

  • Coordinate with laboratories to secure appropriate analysis and in a timetable consistent with project requirements.

  • Compile and interpret field and analytical data into accurate and comprehensive conceptual site models.

  • Learn the AECOM quality management system and ensure its effective implementation by the team for all projects and proposals.

Within the EHS & Remediation services discipline you will be involved in projects supporting a range of objectives including planning and development, compliance and permitting, due diligence and remediation offing a wide range of experience and wide ranging opportunities for progression in the future to successful candidates.

Minimum Requirements

For this role you will ideally hold a MSc degree in Geology or / Hydrogeology / Contaminated Land / Environmental Engineering / Environmental Science and will have a strong undergraduate degree in a science or engineering based subject. Prior project management experience is essential.

We are particularly looking for candidates with the following skills:


  • Good understanding of contaminated land assessment with experience collecting soil and groundwater data and samples.

  • Experience in supervising intrusive ground investigations e.g. service clearance, drilling, trial pitting.

  • Experience with the development of Conceptual Site Models (CSM).

  • Preparation of technical specifications and contract documentation.

  • Understanding of UK contaminated land regime including key regulations, codes of practice and guidance.

  • Conversant with CDM Regulations

  • Familiar with procuring contractors for geoenvironmental site investigation works.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications.


  • Strong research and report writing. Ability to generate well-written, technically sound reports requiring minor to no report core modification (structure, general content) from senior technical personnel.

  • Strong numerate skills.

  • Self-starter, develops and delivers work under own initiative.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (in English); fluency in other languages an advantage.


  • Minimum five years of relevant experience undertaking environmental site investigation including geoenvironmental exploratory investigation & management of subcontractors.

  • Experience in stakeholder, client- and UK regulator-facing situations

  • Experience in geoenvironmental project management

  • Experience of working in a corporate environment (within or outside of environmental consultancy).

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSc degree of PhD in Geology or / Hydrogeology / Contaminated Land / Environmental Engineering / Environmental Science and will have a strong undergraduate degree in a science or engineering based subject.

  • Full Driving Licence essential.

  • Expected to be working towards chartership with a relevant learned institution
