We provide professional services in areas such as aviation, transit, freight rail, highways and bridges, planning, and ports and marine. Our global network of top-tier specialists delivers comprehensive services over the full life cycle of a project to benefit clients in government and private industries.

Job Summary

The Transportation Business Unit’s Operations Director will report directly to the Transportation Regional Business Line Leader (RBLL). The Transportation Operations Director works with the COO, Regional Project Delivery & Controls Director, Regional Finance Director, RBLLs, Workforce Planning Team, and Finance and Accounting (F&A) managers to provide operational management of the assigned Business Line (Transportation).

Specific responsibilities include (app 80% internal / 20% external):

Project/Delivery

  • Provide support to Project Managers across all elements of project execution

  • Manage resources to execute and deliver on projects for that Area

  • Review project progress, course-correct and problem-solve as needed

  • Ensure operational excellence on projects

  • Coordinate project staffing

  • Track key milestones and anticipate potential risks & mitigate

  • Assure compliance with AECOM Quality Program requirements

  • Assure billing and cash collection

People/Administrative

  • Manage resources across projects

  • Build, train and retain people that align with the BL strategies

  • Partner with RBLLs on BD resource allocation/prioritization (esp. Seller-Doers)

  • Conduct monthly project reviews with PMs, Project Delivery & Controls Director, and RBLLs (as needed)

  • Work closely with COO, Project Delivery & Controls Director, Regional Finance Director and Finance Managers, and RBLL on regional P/L management

  • Assure diversity in hiring, retention and promotions

RBLL-enablement

  • Enable RBLLs to allocate time to BD by providing support resources who can work on operational duties (eg, ops support for reporting)

  • Support staffing and workforce planning to free up time for BD

Business Development –

  • Support client engagement and pursuits, Go/No Go analysis, and portfolio analysis as needed

  • Maintain and grow key client relationships

Key Performance Indicators include: Safety, Gross and Net Revenue, Direct Personnel Expense (Utilization), Direct Labor Multiplier, As Sold Margin, Gross Margin, Contribution Margin, Hiring/Turn-over, Cash Flow, and DSO

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 10+ years of profit and loss experience

  • 2+ years’ experience managing comparably sized design & consulting profit and loss center

  • Proven financial and operational acumen

  • Proven ability to assess and mitigate contractual and performance risks

  • Collaborative style; team player

  • Willingness to see opportunity and act

  • Ability to lead by influence, be decisive and have a strategic mindset

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preferably with AECOM or legacy companies

  • 2+ years working in Los Angeles / SoCal geography

  • Operational knowledge of AECOM management systems such as APIC, ABC, etc and AECOM’s financial management processes

  • Proficiency in using APIC (new EPM tool) and executing EACs

  • Experience in process optimization and team leadership

  • Comfortable in leading and managing within a matrixed organization

  • Willingness to challenge the status quo and those stuck in it

  • Proven history with delivers on commitments made
