Job Summary

AECOM is currently recruiting for a Technical Director to join our well-established, experienced and expanding Geotechnical team in London.

We are looking for an ambitious team player with a passion for problem solving and who wish to develop innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding.

We require an individual with an extensive career history in geotechnical engineering and who is highly experienced in leading teams undertaking geotechnical studies and design for complex developments. Experience in new build rail projects including High Speed Rail would be advantageous.

Nationally our Ground Engineering team comprises some 175 staff and provides one-stop access to services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design, contract administration and construction. We work for leading UK clients including, Highways England, Network Rail, HCA, BP, Shell, Local Authorities and Thames Water, as well as leading contractors and developers for overseas clients. We have an impressive portfolio of projects, working on a range major infrastructure projects including Thames Tideway, Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Stockholm Bypass, Mersey Gateway and Northern Hub.

The role will involve leading a geotechnical design team to deliver services to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget. The individual will work closely with our client’s team and must have strong behavioural competencies with respect to client care, collaborative working, responsibility and independent decision making. The role will include preparation of fee proposals for new work elements and projects.

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role we're looking for candidates who can demonstrate the following

Extensive geotechnical design experience

Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills

Proven track record in leadership of design teams and management of delivery and round related risks in a design and build environment

Demonstrates high level of accountability and independent decision making

Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues, client and delivery partners

Identify training and support needs for individuals within the department to ensure technical competence;

Strong written and verbal communication skills: the ability to write clear and concise technical reports is essential

Experienced in design of geotechnical works including slopes, foundations, retaining structures, strengthened earthworks, track bed and pavement foundations and ground improvement

In depth knowledge of a wide variety of UK ground conditions, but particularly those of Southern England

In depth knowledge and experience of relevant Eurocodes and UK Standards and Specifications, in particular those of Network Rail and Highways England

Due to the location of some of the projects you must be willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK and undertake short assignments overseas

A valid UK driving licence is essential

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a Chartered Engineer, preferably holding a first degree in Civil Engineering although candidates with an Engineering Geology or similar background will be considered.

Ideally the candidate will have a relevant post graduate qualification such as an MSc in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology
