Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

Under general supervision, the Alarm Center Dispatcher in the Emergency Communications Center is responsible for monitoring communication equipment, receiving incoming calls for assistance and dispatching personnel and equipment.

Essential Responsibilities:

1) Operate communication equipment to receive incoming calls for assistance.

2) Activate alarm system to notify fire stations.

3) Operate telephone console to receive incoming calls for assistance.

4) Question caller to determine nature of problem and type and number of personnel and equipment needed, following established guidelines.

5) Scan status charts and computer screen to determine units available.

6) Monitor alarm system signals that indicate location of fire or other emergency.

7)Operate communications system to dispatch fire, medical and other personnel and equipment.

8) Input commands to update computer files and maintain logs.

9) Provide pre-arrival instructions to caller, using knowledge of emergency medical techniques.

10) Relay instructions or information to remove units.

11) Routinely test communications, alarm equipment, and backup systems to ensure serviceability.

12) Update Alarm Room logs as required.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Position is represented by a Union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Must possess High School Diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years’ work experience directly related to the fire department communications center or in dispatching other emergency services or completion of an established Apprenticeship program. Achieve qualified Journeyman. DoD Telecommunicator I and II certification levels are preferred. Other related industry certifications accepted. Possess a working knowledge of computerized fire alarm and reporting systems. Possess and maintain a government Top Secret security clearance. Possess a valid state issued driver’s license.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Work is performed in an office, shop facility with no unusual hazards, occasional lifting to 20 pounds, kneeling, standing and walking, routinely sitting and constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communications. The nature of the work requires the ability to communicate clearly and accurately. Routinely required to sit for extended periods of time. Must speak in a clear manner and be temperamentally suited for the position, including being able to remain calm and take decisive action during emergencies; remain alert during periods of inactivity and when carrying out normal repetitive operations.
