Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Traffic Engineer for immediate employment in the Indianapolis, IN office. The position will report to the on-site AECOM project leadership team. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of traffic signal system operation and intelligent transportation systems.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop actuated/coordinated traffic signal timing plans, including building and optimizing Synchro models, developing timing databases, coordinating with agency staff to determine implementation needs/desires, fine tuning new timings, and conducting before and after studies

  • Assess performance of the traffic signal system and prepare various reports

  • Assist in implementing traffic signal timing plans

  • Conduct traffic and ITS engineering studies

  • Effectively manage all assigned tasks and schedules

  • Coordinate effectively with agency staff, contractors, and other consultants

  • Collect traffic data from the field, including operational observations, intersection lane measurements, grades, and signal phasing

  • Interact professionally and proactively with clients and ensure clients are highly satisfied with deliverables provided

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, traffic engineering or ITS engineering

  • 5+ years of practical experience in a professional engineering related work environment

  • Ability to work in both a field and office environment

  • Computer proficiency: Windows environment, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access); Microstation, AutoCAD, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and ability to maintain in adherence with an organized project file management structure

  • Ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure

  • Ability to communicate clearly, organize correspondence, convey urgency and document decisions made to project management

  • Ability to meet rigorous attendance standards

  • Ability to efficiently and effectively speak, read and write on technical topics in the English language

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of self-motivation and resourcefulness

  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical reports, documents, client communication and technical memoranda

  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to a variety of project specific operational policies and protocols

  • Demonstrated ability to professional communicate with public regarding operational concerns on roadways in a layperson manner

  • Due to the nature of this work, qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test

  • Must be professional, self-motivated, resourceful and able to prioritize the successful execution of various traffic engineering related tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Must possess a valid driver's license as travel may be required within Indiana to serve the project, potential exists for one to two day trips at infrequent intervals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project Management or Deputy Project Management skills and responsibilities

  • INDOT ITS design experience
